Just some reassurance for anyone comin to hamilton with kiddies.

We have been here nearly 2wks and Jack developed a cough on the flight, I figured it would clear up in time and he wasnt really unwell so I just looked after him myself. However yest he became quite unwell, complainin of a sore mouth (throat I figured) & a sore ear. I gave him calpol & figured it was typical of him to become poorly on easter wkend when everythin closes!! But he had a really unsetled night & we ended up takin him to a 24hr doc at 4am. Cost $40 but well worth it, he got a top to toe and the poor wee soul has croup, tonsilitis, and both ears are infected. He has 3 medicines to take which will not be fun!

So just incase it's one of those naggin worries u have about where to go if the little one is poorly, I can certainly recommend the 24 hr clinic in Hamilton :clap

Jason had problems with his ears & throat when he arrived in September - I had to take him to the Doctors eventually as it wouldn't go away, she explained that long distance flights can cause ear problems due to the dehydration and altitude. (ear drums dry and tight)

he ended up with drops for ears & nose and now it seems to have settled down, but he still gets sore thoats easily...I had ear problems too, but I didnt think about how the altitude could affect the body (just my skin - LOL)

So all you future parents due to fly long distance - it may be something to remember just in case yours have ear ache for a while after they land.

Hopefully they won't,

Oh and I hope the easter bunny cheers Jack up;)

Happy Easter

All three of our children got sick almost on arrival, with the oldest getting sick on the flight into Auckland. Vomitting, diarrhea, and now finally getting over coughs. We took our youngest to our local clinic and have submitted urine and stool samples for analysis; he did turn out to have an ear infection.

I do wonder if it wasn't largely due to the flight, changing air pressures and moisture levels, and possibly new bugs in the area as well. We've heard that some new immigrants are sick for months after arrival. My wife and I have had no problems though.

Thanks for the tip...

Our 2 were also extremely poorly after arriving in NZ - with the eldest (then 18 months) becoming ill on the flight and our youngest (then 8 weeks) becoming ill shortly after. They both almost ended up in hospital but we found an excellent GP in Auckland who told us to come back each day so he could check them out and monitor them - if they had got worse they certainly would have been admitted. They had picked up both viral and bacterial infections resulting in chest infections, itchy and runny eyes, bronchitis, elavated heart rates, fever etc etc...... It appears that may kids are arriving ill which is a worry.

I'm hoping they are ok on the flight home in May!

If you think about it, they are stuck in a sealed box for 24 hours with recirulated air that any airbourne virus or bacteria can travel round in. So if there is anyone unwell on the plane it will spread. Add to that the fact that their immune systems haven't fully developed you can understand that children are unwell on arrival.

its good to know that there are good doctors in NZ and the price isn't bad compared to the peace of mind and a decent nights sleep.

Hope jack is feeling better and looking forward to loads of chocolate
