Well, if you want a nice restaurant then I'm sure you know about the Boulcott St Bistro - fab place, and you don't book, just turn up, and you should have a table in 20 minutes or less :)
Zibibbo is nice too, their tapas style food is really good

You're in Welly - sorry missed this thread... erm are you looking for evening or daytime things? I agree Boulcott Bistro is supposed to be lovely - have a friend who goes there for every wedding anniversary because they love it so much. Alana Estate in Waiarapa does fantastic food but only daytimes. I recently went with a bunch of friends around the harbour in the Wellesley the other night (boat) for dinner - that was pretty spectacular & quite reasonably priced for dinner & the cruise - watching the sunset over Welly harbour whilst cruising eating dinner was lovely...
If you are going out for a daytrip, then how's about a wine trip round Waiarapa, you can get day trips to the South Island round wineries too (but if you've lived in SI already which I think I saw on your details then maybe you've done that already), day trip to Kapiti Island - there's something you're not likely to forget in a hurry - spent my friend's 30th there about a year ago - they have a lodge to stay in if you want to stay overnight - you have to get permits from DOC I can send you full details if interested & you can go kiwi spotting at night if you stay over, which I must say has probably been the best weekend ever since we moved here... They let us take a birthday cake & some bubbly with us too to celebrate her birthday!

I'm Deb and Andy's daughter but I have a few idea's. If he is into sport you could take him skiing and then say your taking him out for a meal but really you've planed a suprise party with all his family and friends there, mabye.
