How many more hoops do we have to jump through???
My girlfriend & I have been in NZ for the last 2 months, living in Wellington and hoping to stay here for the forseeable future.
My partner applied for work using her qualifications (she's an interior designer) and duly got offered a position with a highly regarded firm up on Thorndon Quay.
Great, we thought....now all we do is apply for a work permit for her, a de facto one for me and we're getting somewhere.
But no - despite everything in the news stating that NZ is crying out for new immigrants and young people to fuel its economy ( specifically white, English-speaking, well-educated people - their bias, not mine) - we are told that we have to wait 3 weeks while NZIS do a labour market check. This for a job that has been advertised since September, that the firm in question have interviewed 8 kiwis for with no success until my partner came along, and despite our sincere intentions to apply for residency in due course!!!
In the meantime we're running out of $ and it looks like we may even have to go back to the UK if they don't hurry up.......
Jeez - sorry to be such a whinger but we really do feel in limbo. It's great that Welly's so nice & sunny at the moment, which takes the sting out of it, but it's still a big pain. Especially since we saved up for a year to get here....

The wheels of bureaucracy spin at about the same rate the world over it would seem.

I think the work permit thing is normal. I know before we got our PR, the headteacher filled out a section on a work permit just in case, with simular sounding reasons. I haven't yet hurd of anyone not getting a WV, ( maybe someone knows better!!). I might now be a case of talking sweetly to friends and family or even the bank to tie you over.
All the very best , and a speedy discussion- Chips

Ah that's not good Dave- Fingers crossed for you :hopeso hoping NZIS sort you out soon. I believe from our experience that unless the company has a talent acreditation they require them to fill in an NZIS form with proof that they have been unsuccessful in employing a Kiwi to do the job.

I hope they sort you out soon and you'll be able to have a lovely Xmas!

Dave K get your partners new company to phone up the immigration people and tell them they need her straight away and to tell them direct they have advertised and had no success. Most companies who have had personel shortages would rather take the time to do this than risk losing her and readvertising. This happened to some friends in Auckland and they got the work visa in a week. Not saying it will happen just it might just do it straight away or Xmas will add another week or 10 days to it. Some times you have to give a bit of a push.

Hey, thanks for the replies guys....yeah, her company did fax NZIS a letter stressing the urgency of the situation but it hasn't helped so far to fasttrack it.
We'll just have to sit tight I guess & enjoy the sunshine :)
Cheers.

Got it!!!
After 2&1/2 weeks of Immigration queue torture ( and 2 months of hell before that actually finding work, and doing endless interviews & waiting while the decidedly less-than-urgent Kiwis decided to offer the job..........) but we got it.....here's to at least 2 years in NZ.. Yay!!!
