After our family settles in NZ we hope to be closer to Asia (family ties) to explore it more easily than we can from the US.
Flight times from NZ (or Australia) to Viet Nam? Japan? India? Singapore? A hop-skip-jump or an all day/all night exhausting affair?
Approximate costs (NZD)?

I was reminded just how out in the middle of nowhere NZ is on a recent trip to Thailand. 12 hour flight (about $1200NZD). Everything is about a 12 hour flight from NZ (except Aussie). 12 hours to Asia, 12 hours to LA and of course, expensive.
But being remote does have it's advantages. Don't quote me on this, but I heard that the pet food recall that affected North America didn't affect NZ because the pet food hadn't reached NZ by the time the recall was made in North America.:)

Great qu. Will watch for comments on this thread. Travel has always been a big part of our lives and it will be important to get out every now and then should we move so the fares are really important. Bring on Ryan air /virgin to NZ :)

We have Virgin in NZ already - Pacific Blue. They offer cheap(ish) flights to the Pacific Islands and Australia. I've flown with them in the past to Tonga, and am flying from Perth to Brisbane and then onto Fiji next month.
However, sometimes they're no cheaper than other airlines - they just happened to have a sale on when I booked my ticket, which is why I went with them...

Oh, and to answer the original question about flight prices - you can do a search on the House of Travel website for flights and it will show you all the available options and various costs.
I find it helpful to get an idea before I book and then do some searching about to get the best deal.
