Hi All

This is my first post but my wife and I spend 2-3 hours a day viewing this compelling site.
We visited ChCh last March for a couple of days during our 3 week whistle stop tour of Nz both North and South Islands.
We breifly toured the areas of Burwood,Parklands, North Shore and North New Brigton after visiting the QE2 Stadium.
Our EOI was selected 15th Sept 105 points no job offer, and still waiting for ITA to arrive.
Can anyone advise on these areas for family living son aged 9 daughter 7 both enjoy sports and the outdoors.
I noticed this was the area for the BBQ so I hope we are barking up the right tree.
:raebanana Cath loves these so one had to go in our first post.

Hi and welcome,
cant help you personally on the Ch Ch thing. You probably need to be talking to Veronica or Moorf, they're in that area. I'm sure you'll get the info' you need.

The further north suburbs you spoke of are 'posher' but north Brighton some people would be iffy about. (Not speaking for myself here, just accepted local views) Sports are a big agenda here, whatever the area you will be able to find them.

Thanks for the info.

Do you know anything about the infill site at Burwood.
I have read that some of the locals have complained about the smell.
We noticed a new development called Tumara Park, which looks nice wondered if this was affected and what sort of prices these homes are fetching.

I live 5 mins from qe2, in north Brighton. We have been here 10 yrs and for us with 5 kids it suits as it is close to the golf range (14 yr old and all his mates are big into it) swimming pool, beach, river for fishing (herrings!) shops, 5 buses, and 15 mins to town....4 mins to the palms and the reading cinema that opened last year and is fab!

The houses are WAY cheaper and you get the smoke from the fires in winter being blown into fendalton by us! (cos of the wind off the sea...hee hee!)

No good high schools, (excellent primary though) but if you can put the kids names down for chch boys high/girls you might get in on ballot.

Tumara park is an excellent sub division for kids I recon (the smell is bad from burwood only on nor west days) again, queenspark primary would be the local school....no good high schools near. You would have to drive/ take a bus.

The BBQ was at pines beach which is near kaiapoi, about 20 mins from tumara.

North shore is nice, but very sandy due to the summer wind off the beach, everything erodes! the pine trees also block your afternoon sun...and can be quite cold during the day due to the wind off the sea.(winter you hardly get any sun..I have friends living there..opposite the park) I wouldnt live there for a million bucks. (I would live on a hill for the view)

The water is too cold to swim, and again...even further from any schools..no primary school near.

Burwoods land fill is being closed next year and it will then all go to kate vally (crazy) wine district.
but the smell will always be around. The forest is a great place for biking/horses though and you can get to the sea through the forest.

I think this area is a really good part of town.. as there is lots to do. Just be careful where you buy.

email me if you want any more help

One of my colleagues is building a place in Tumara Park at the moment. It is costing him $380k for a four bedroom single level house, with a reasonable specification - it will have heat pumps and double glazing. It's quite a nice spot.

and land there 4 yrs ago was $80k a section....if only I had made my fortune then...I would have snapped a load up! (Travis country was $60k a section.. when that was issued...arrgh!)

I love the bbq area on the village green...can you imagine that in the UK..well posh! great park area, basket ball court and the bbq area is in a large boat..cool!

I just asked him - he paid $120k for the section about 6 months ago.

I had my house valued last week - it looks like it's gone up by $180k in the last year. It makes the decision on when to bring money over/exchange rates a bit harder if property values are increasing at that kind of rate, although everybody says it will be slowing down.

Looking at the idea of family areas, myself, hoping to come some time next year when my daughter will be 8.

What is Rangiora like and how far out of Christchurch is it, close enough for a compute? House prices looked OK there, in comparison to the nicer areas of Christchurch itself.

Is there a downside?

Hope this sideline helps your orignianl question.
