Hi all
managed to get my 15 year old a job for the school holidays $9.70 per hour for 40 hours. Had to think of someway to get him off the computer and texting and out !! If he does ok it wil turn into a regular job at weekends for him so i,ll be watching closely ( as i,m one of the managers) although he wont be working under my direction. I,m sure the money wont last him long he will have already spent it in his head . But does all the time kids spend texting and on computers bug anybody else?
Cheers Cardy:yes

Not sure about texting -- that wasn't as big when my daughter was a teenager, but she spent a lot of time on the computer just playing games. Her dad & I had concerns about it, but she kept her grades up and had other interests. At the time we couldn't have predicted this, but she eventually studied game design at university and got a fulltime job as a designer right out of school. Loves her job and can't tell much difference between work and play, since all of it involves gaming.
I guess I vote for encouraging kids' proficiency with computers so long as they lead balanced lives.

Very interesting as that's what my boy wants to do. What study path did she follow out of interest?
I do think that as longs there is a balance then no concern. There have been studies that show youngsters playing on computer games are developing important skills. I ensure mine do other activities, like this holidays they swim every day for a couple of hours and play footy in the garden. If they then choose to go on the computer or watch some TV (Very restricted in what I allow them to watch) then fine.

Nicola, my daughter's study path is kind of interesting -- she graduated with a major in East Asian Languages and Culture and a minor in computer game design. She has programming skills but wouldn't identify herself as a "coder", working more on concept and game structure. Her school (University of Southern California) is in Los Angeles, also home to some of the industry's biggest computer game design studios, and so there were strong ties between the school and local firms. Some of her professors were the actual creators of very well-known games, which to her was just stunning, like being taught by a celebrity. She got an internship a year before graduation and then went fulltime with that same firm last spring.
More and more schools are offering majors in game design, often as a joint program between the computer science and graphic arts departments. Great field to go into -- lots of opportunity.
