Transferring money to the UK

Hi all, I was wondering if anybody knows the best way to move our $NZ back into GBP as we will be selling the car and various other items so will have a fair bit to convert. When we came we transferred some through the commonwealth account at ASB and got stiffed by them so don't want to go down that route again. We still have a UK account as most of our savings are in there - not sure if that makes any difference or not.
Thanks alot,
L :)

Spudulike,
Probably your best options are HIFX and XE Trade. I've met people that swear by one or the other as offereing the best rates, so if you've got time set up with both so you can compare on the day. :D
You have to give quite a bit of informatiuon because of the money laundering laws so it can take awhile.

With HIFX you can fill out their online form and then a trader will contact you and send you an application form in the post. You then have to provide ID for those using the service. I think we used passport photocopies and a currebt bank statement. They will ask you how much you want to change and when, but just be vague, I told them that I would also be checking out XE. They will phone you up every now and then to see if you want to change any money, but they are polite enough if you say you are not ready.
With XE trade it took a lot longer to set up. We actually emailed them our proof of address/ID by taking a picture of it with our digital camera. They also want details of the bank you will mainly be sending money from. And they will also need to speak to you by phone to verify who you are, but you can arrange a time to suit you. With this service you do it youself and don't speak to a dealer, so I would have thought you have a better chance of getting the better rate.
Hope this helps!
Cheers
Tia

Thank you very much Tia, I really appreciate your reply - it helps enormously.
I'll have a go at setting up both tomorrow and hope I have enough time to get everything to them!!

We brought all our house sale cash here through Transferz- and plan on sending it back the same way (once we sell this shed - sorry i mean house:laugh ) Rates were good and its a flat rate $20 fee
Try transfez on the search as there are threads with the right links on them by Dawn i think

I have used XE Trade for a couple years now to move money from the US to NZ. Worked well and it was cheap. I was wary at first and made a US$100 transfer just to see that the whole process worked as expected.
As another poster said, you need to give them quite a bit of info to set it up, but then once it is set up it is very easy to use.

Hi Louise,
We used HIFX when we came over, and will be using them again in the next couple of weeks when we go back. We found them really helpful and it was all really straightforward once we had set the account up. We too are selling the cars and will be transferring the money back. Am selfishly hoping that the rate continues to improve for us, as when we came over we got 3 dollars to the pound and I think its now something like 2.7 dollars!! Hope all your packing is going well, will hopefully catch up before you go but will definitely be in touch once we are all back in South West!!
