It depends on the level of cover you require really. Southern Cross are one of the largest (if not the largest) and so pay out well. I found that when I went self-employed they bumped my premiums and it was better for me to go elsewhere to get the cover I required.
I'd do as PCP suggested and try contacting a broker - or phone around and get some quotes.

As an aside, I found that the company discounted schemes on offer were restricted to certain policies only, which never seemed to be the one I wanted...
