As a UK citizen living in New Zealand, is it a good idea to register with the UK embassy? Do people generally do this, or not bother?

I think if you were living in Iran it would be a good idea but I havent heard of anyone doing it and I work with loads of Brits and other foreigners.

I don't know anyone who has done this from UK or any other immigrant population, within my circle of friends/colleagues... but maybe someone else on here might. Not sure why I'd want to do it either.

I have been to the embassy a couple of times (Kiwis laugh at it because its behind a big security gate & fence - there's a heck of a lot of security going on there - I don't know if this is standard for British Embassies but it seemed really out of place in laid back Welly!) Someone even took me to the toilet & stood outside the cubicle to make sure I didn't go anywhere I shouldn't be!

During my time in Japan the British Embassy encouraged people to register with them in case there was a large earthquake. Not exactly sure why that would help...maybe easier for people outside Japan to check who survived.

NZ is in an earthquake zone, no?

My parents always register with the British Embassy abroad. It makes it easier for the Embassy (or High Commission in NZ's case) to contact people in case of an incident, natural disaster etc. In some parts of the world of course it's critical.
