Over the last week or so I've had a maddening problem in the tower. Every single day a carpet of flies was appearing on the deep sills, floor etc. I hoovered and sprayed and after 30 mins there was another complete layer of dead bodies strewn across the office.

I've been doing this daily for a couple of days now and, until the cold day yesterday, there was a constant stream - thousands upon thousands - the buzz was deafening. It was totally gross and Amytiville Horror came to mind.

Well, it turns out that we've been hit by cluster flies. If you're in the inland Canterbury area and have noticed an increase you could be suffering too - although it's mostly those of us who are in the foothills (inland from Ashburton and Darfield).

Here's a local news article about them : :exit

She recalls a party being held in the hall last June. Flies were hibernating in the roof cavity and when ceiling heaters were turned on hundreds flew down and went down the tops of people in the room, seeking warmth.
"People ran out of the room screaming.
“It’s like a horror movie,” she said.

 That photo is horrible, but old Warren looks a happy man! Perhaps he's found the answer to true job satisfaction. :laugh

Cheers
