If you make your own mushy peas, use the blue peas that you can buy loose in Bin Inn or similar places.

They are just as good if not better than UK dried peas.

I object to paying $2.30 for a small tin of Batchelors Mushy Peas.....scandalous amount of money !!

There's a UK shop in Welly too - but they're very pricey... After Eight's were $17- a box - the same size was being sold in our local New World for $5!!!! That's one heck of a mark-up!

On a side note, I've been pleasantly suprised how much 'UK' stuff I can get in various supermarkets here..

so far I've seen

Branston pickle
PG tips teabags
Heinz tomato sauce
Oxo stock cubes
Marmite

and quite a few other things that I'd thought I couldn't get and diligently packed in my container! Also unlike the 'brit' stores, they've been pretty reasonably priced. My OH has also discovered his FCUK stuff in a Unichem which seems to stock a whole raft of stuff we used to buy in Boots. Now if we just get an M & S ......

or maybe Rangiora is now buying in specially to support the growing UK population of North Canterbury :laugh

I was doing a survey last week and saw http://www.britishdownunder.co.nz (http://www.britishdownunder.co.nz)on the side on the car in the carpark.

It looks interesting, but I'm not too sure how much I actually recognise from the UK. However, the Bargain Bin sounds interesting...:roll

This is the best tip we were given, with regards to food. All the other stuff is complete YAK. We get the 'Extra Light' and it's fab :nice1

F.Y.I.

I think possibly the staff member was meaning that Unichem are the Boots of NZ.

Unichem are owned by Australian based API who part own Pharmacies and Franchise systems in Australia & NZ. In NZ they own 67% of Unichem, Amcal, and Dispensary First brands and pharmacies.

Incidentally they are currently are the subject of 2 take over bids.

Am I just being hugely curmudgeonly here? My world would not fall apart if I couldn't ever buy British food again. What's to miss?

PS I love Marmite (but also like Vegemite and have done since Men At Work :D)

We only buy Alpen from the brit shops, but if it were not available, then hubby would survive quite happily...

I haven't missed any British food particularly. Well, if you waved a packet of nice 'n' spicy nik naks at me I wouldn't say no...
