Do dogs going to NZ need to have rabies jabs? The Pet Passport scheme only appears to be valid for Europe (probably elsewhere too) but no mention of PPs for New Zealand. It's a lot of expense and a 6 month wait if we have it done when it's not required. Any ideas?

We brought our mutt with us and she had to have the microchip inserted even though NZ doesn't/didn't have the technology to keep tabs on the dogs when we arrived. She was jabbed up and that took a month to complete. I am told there are only 3 countries in the world where should the animal arrive from one of the countries then there isn't the requirement for quarantine. Countries being UK, Hawaii, and Norway.
Have a chat with your vet and he/she will put you right.

Hi there...I'm new but from what we've found out about our dog. Going from Italy to NZ there is definitely a need to have the rabies testing done. Look on this link for further info, on here is the list of countries that must have all the tests done but are considered low risk as far as rabies go.:)

You don't need it done to come to NZ from the UK, but you go from NZ to the UK you will (even though there is no rabies in NZ)...
You don't need it done to transport pets from NZ to Australia, just a health check from the vet and a letter stating that NZ is rabies free.

Thanks for that. I've had them jabbed but won't bother with the blood tests (that's the expensive bit) after all. Now, can anyone shrink a large Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla down to the size of a Chihuahua to save on shipping costs???

We brought our 70kg Estrella mountain dog with us from the UK. We didn't need to have rabies vac done (although he had it for a French trip he had made a few yrs ealier). As long as your dog has been in the UK for the last 12mths its not necessary to have. As already said you will need it if you want to bring him back to the UK.
Also, I and have been warned by our NZ vet that getting a rabies vac in NZ is realy a pain as the vets don't hold it as it's not used for anything. The up shot is that it has to be ordered specially via MAF and will cost a fortune.
Top tip get it done cheeper in the UK and it gives you 3yrs option for return travel. (Only France insist that it is given yrly).
