(was unsure where this should go)

Snapper with passionfruit and chili sauce with garlic roasted snips, kumara, silver beet and green beans. Followed by rhubarb and feijoa crumble.

Sounds like a posh restaurant but the snapper was a cheap from dh's work (fresh this am), snips, green beans and kumara from veg shed, silver beet and rhubarb from friend's garden, feijoa gathered from playcentre while cleaning this am and the chili sauce and passionfruit sauce were a couple of dollars and will last yonks.

What are you eating for dinner?

That makes my chicken pie and mash sound a bit scruffy! Didn't even make the pie - bought from local baker this morning (but they are darned good pies!!).

Lucky you getting such fresh fish, that's something I miss here in inland Canterbury.. craving monkfish now :wah

Three months ago we were vegetarians. We quickly were tempted by the fish here and then have found gelatine so hard to avoid (on a small budget, don't panic if you're vegetarian and coming here on anything but the poverty line), that we've decided to turn a blind eye to it. There's even gelatine in the cream and yoghurt!!!!!!

Good question. Think I'm going to do pitta pizzas for the kids in a minute. As for the adults - I haven't got a clue. Looks like it could be a beans on toast night... We do eat well a lot of the time though!!

I totally 100% recommend feijoa and rhubarb crumble; probably the best combination I've tried!

Especially when eaten in front of a roaring fire with a glass of Hawkes Bay Merlot :)

I made a chicken stir-fry and baingan bharta (roasted eggplant mashed up w/spices and tomato) along with some roti (I didn't make those, though - frozen from Moore Wilson's).

Ok, it's proper name is pasta al forna con pomodori e mozerella. You need real orecchiette if poss, we have to get it from specialist food shop in Cambridge - the stuff in the supermarkets is not orecchiette, even though it says it is.

olive oil
1 onion peeled and chopped
2 cloves of garlic peeled and sliced
dried red chilli flakes
3 tins of good quality plum toms
basil leaves - handful
1 tbspn red wine vinegar
400g orecchiette pasta
4 big handfuls of grated parmesan
3 times 150g balls of mozzarella

Boil large pan of salted water. In another pan glug in olive oil, fry onion, chilli and garlic slowly for 10 mins. Add tinned toms with small glass of water. Simmer for 20 mins. Liquidise. Tear basil leaves (lots) into sauce. Season with viegar, salt, pepper.

Boil orecchiette in other pan. drain, toss with half the tomato sauce and handful of parmesan. use earthenware dish, lasagne dish or something. layer pasta in dish with layers of tomato sauce, handfuls of grated parmesan and sliced mozerella, repeating in layers until all used up - layer of parmesan on top. Cook gas 6 for 15 mins til all golden, crisp and bubbling. Yum, off to have seconds...

Just thrown some spaghetti into a pot, which I shall have with some garlic, chilli, chopped parsley and a big glug of olive oil. Very simple and easy. I'm too tired tonight to do much else.

And when we get off the plane on our arrival in NZ can we swing by your homes as we make our way (likely) to the South Island?? Mmmm...

It's great to be inspired by other cooks!

I'm hoping to squeeze in, after school and before violin class and soccer game, a Vietnamese dish of fresh greens, chicken satay, rice noodles, mint, basil, and sauce from garlic, chili paste, lime juice, fish sauce and sugar.

Well they do have the most unusual, quite aromatic flavour so I could imagine it being that way. You'll have to gorge on them this time next year :)
