I visited the doctors for the first time a few weeks ago, I was out of town, and it was late at night, a holiday weekend, so I was quite happy to pay $120 just to get myself sorted.
visited my own doc once I got back, 40$ - seemed reasonable, got sent for a few tests.
Went for a blood and urinal test, seemed easy enough, walked out, and half way down the street thought, should I not have to pay? - went back to confirm, they said I would only have to pay if sent by a consultant rather than a gp.
A few days on, I trundle down to the next visit - a scan and an x-ray, all fine, this time they ask me to pay $270, I did not argue and paid.
The lady handed me some x-rays and I asked what am I supposed to do with them, she said hang on to them in case you need to see a consultant.
I rang the GP about the tests and he said everything was OK.
So I remain confused, what we actually have to pay for and when, and how much.
I do have private medical insurance, but unfortunately they do not cover the last three years - existing conditions - so I cannot claim anything back.
This little episode was only a few hundred dollars, but not clear yet on what the future exposure could be, if I got something bad.
bemused by it all.
