Hi all, I'm really hoping that someone here can give me some reassurance on shipping our household goods back to UK less than a year after we moved out here to NZ. We are heading back in mid-May and are just getting the quotes in for shipping. Looking through some of the paperwork that we have been given it seems that as we have been out of the UK for less than 12 months we are liable to duty and VAT on our household goods and effects. Does this just mean on things we have bought here? We arrived in NZ in early June 06 on visitors visas then got work visas in early August (our household goods were then sent out from UK in mid August) - we got PR in September I think (!!). So in all circumstances it definitely looks like we cannot meet the requirement that we have been outside UK/EU for more than 12 months. I know there are others on here who have moved back within the year, did you have to pay VAT on new goods or ALL your consignment?

Thanks in anticipation

Maggie

Hi there. We returned within a year and when our stuff all arrived home again I got a bill for £120 from customs. I think that was tax on household items that we'd brought in NZ and transported home.

Hope that helps. Good luck on your return. I hope you'll be as happy as we are. Living in NZ for 6 months really made me appreciate the UK more. I wake up happy every day - just glad to be home where I belong. x

So how did they know what items you bought in NZ? do you just fill a form in and they take your word for it?- we haven't bought any thing other than a dishwwsher, and stereos for the kids at Xmas- but not very happy at paying vat on top of gst. Mmmmmm:(

Yep we had to fill in a form whilst still in NZ to say what items we'd brought there and how long we'd used them for etc. No problem really.
