I had a rates bill today and there was a leaflet in it telling us why our rates were going up by 9% per year for the next 6 years. :roll Anyway, there was a graph giving weekly costs. What does everyone think? I agree with some but others seem lower than what I'm spending.

HB Today - $6 pw
Sky - $17 pw
Bread and Milk - $23 pw
Telephone and Broadband - $25 pw
Rates - $27 pw
Power - $30 pw

Well I definitely don't spend $6 a week on Hawkes Bay today, lol!

No sky here, telephone and broadband I think is about right for us, bread and milk we probably spend a little less, rates are included in our rent, power seems about right because we don't use electric fires etc.

Our rates are $40 a week but apart from that it seems about right for us, too.

It's really the power I'm not sure of. I seem to use more than that.:(

Our telephone and broadband is more than that, albeit through personal choice.

Our power is nearer £40 than $30 in summer and I have no idea what the heat pump will use in the coming few months.

Our first bill for gas and electric last year was $900 we nearly went home.
never got another like that (touch wood) but we are more careful not leaving stuff on unnecessarily.

Now we are in our new house am hoping it will be better anyway ,no high roofs like the rental and insulation ,unlike the rental.

We are lucky now that between us we probably earn what we did in the uk but we do have a bigger mortgage and do find some things more expensive.:nice1

I can't remember which month it was but do remember posting it on here! I think there was a competition to see who had the highest. Mind you, it was the coldest winter here for over 70 yrs and even the locals were having trouble keeping warm, so I'm hoping that's not the case this year. Plus, we weren't as canny as we are now and have learned how the house "works" and are much more efficient (thank god)...

We have a coal stove (with wetback) and an open fire - that's it.

The $$$ were spent on FIVE rads we had going to keep us from freezing to death for about 8 weeks....

I think heat pumps are supposed to be quite cost effective as long as used in their correct room sizes... and you could always buy boxes of wine and use the leftover boxes to insulate the rooms :D

Maybe we should have a "who can burn through the most electricity in a month" competition with scans of bills needed as proof lol
