Got a $150 on the spot fine, in Nelson, for turning right when traffic light arrow showed orange. Policeman happened to see it and demanded the fine on the spot, kindly waiting while OH went to bank to pay it!! The guy in the car behind us shot through!!

Yep, the police can be a bit tough when issuing tickets at intersections, a few months back I was ticketed for turning right on a green light!

Whoa...the policeman can demand the fine on the spot? :uhoh That'll be something to get used to if that's the case!

Happens in South Africa all the time - although its usually R20 or a tin of coke. ;)

(R20 is around NZ$3 or a pack of cigarettes).

We had an on the spot fine when driving in Spain a few years back. We crossed the border and about 1 min later drove through a tunnel where some police were hanging about playing cards at the other side and they flagged us down and pointed out we had failed to turn our lights on in the (very short) tunnel despite being clearly instructed to do so (sign in Spanish) and escorted us to a cash point. Good way to make a bit of tourist cash I suppose!
