I've started doing a spreadsheet of prices of food shopping. I have it on an Excel file and it is a work in progress. I have a lot more to add and some of the things on it don't have all the info. I thought I would post it and update it as I go along. My intention is to see where I should shop. I prefer New World and if I want to cook something special I always go there but on a day to day basis I'm not proud and I want as much for the $ as possible.

Problem is I can't see how to post it on here. I can't upload the file as it is an invalid file type and when I try to copy and paste it loses the format and is a jumbled mess. Any ideas?

Well done for doing it Nicola....I'll be very interested to see it, although unable to help you upload it I'm afraid.

I dont think you can, it just lets you do photos I think.

Looks like you may have to do the the long way round, via pm and email. for any interested parties...

You could create it as a google doc spreadsheet and post the password here so anyone could see it (but that would also let anyone edit it - but I don't think that would be an issue as it's not like anyone would alter the figures on purpose unless they worked for PaknSav lol)

OK Wilki, as a supposed IT geek (quote SteveD :laugh ) I have never created a Google Doc. Now, I know I could find out how...... but could you save me the time and tell me, please? :D I'm not too worried about changes as I will have to original.

go to https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount?service=writely&passive=true&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2F&followup=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2F&ltmpl=homepage&nui=1

(or google google doc) and create an account - something like ENZ since you'll only be using it on here and security isn't an issue.

In there you can click on create spreadsheet or document.

I'm not sure if you can paste your excel spreadsheet into google spreadsheet, but I've done it the other way round and it worked fine. You can also save a google spreadsheet onto your PC as an excel doc or pdf which I've found useful for my own records (I use this at work since they're too tight to buy me a Word licence)

have a fiddle and see what you think...

I don't suppose the whole doc fits on your screen all at once, does it? You can copy and paste the image of your screen into a photo file. If the file is long, you could make a series of photos... I don't know that this is any easier than the google docs idea, but at least you could post it directly into the forum. Whatever works for you!

Something worth considering before you try this out: how big of a photo does the forum let you post? The method I'm about to outline has you posting an image that's the same size as your computer screen. True, you could post links to the images, but if you were going to post a link...you could just put up the original document on a server instead :-P

To do this (on a PC), you use the "prt sc" button on your keyboard ("print screen," usually in the upper right area). This saves the image of your screen to your clipboard, just like using "Copy" to save text.

Then open any image software you have, such as "Paint," which you'll find under "Accessories" in the Start menu.

Create a new file, with the same resolution (width x height) as your desktop. My desktop is 1280 x 800 pixels, for example. If you don't know your screen resolution, right click on your desktop background, then choose "Properties." In the Properties menu, click on the "Settings" tab, where you'll see your screen resolution listed.

In Paint, they don't let you choose the file resolution when you create it, so you have to go to the "Image" menu, choose "Attributes..." where you can edit the width and height. If you are more comfortable with different software, such as Photoshop or whatever, you can use that :-)

Finally, use Ctrl-V to paste the image of your screen into the photo file. Now you have a photo of the spreadsheet! Save it as a jpg, then post it online, hurrah!

snap, I did this when we arrived, it used to amaze me on the difference of pricings - NOT only from the different stores, but weekly from each shop, as I used to deliberately buy the same brand of goods to check this, it would fluctuate wildly sometimes, and now when I see something on special - I stock up:laugh

just looked back at mine and in our first month, setting up - there was just me and Rob - we spent $4,808.73:exit and a total grocery bill for July 06 was 2936.96
excluding Booze - we were good that month and only spent $21.98

I am quite shocked at the amount of money we have spent so far this year - from the spreadsheet - which I haven't kept up since October it is around
$25,854.01
:( Hopefully we can start saving rather than spending soon.

There's also xcellery (http://www.xcellery.com/). I haven't used it myself, but it does for spreadsheets what flickr or photobucket do for images. Lets you upload and share your excel spreadsheets for free. And you can set the permission so it can only be read, not edited. :yes
