We've been considering buying (a secondhand) campervan to take to NZ. I've been looking on Tradme and campervan websites and they do seem very expensive to buy once we're there.
The problem is... I'm sure that I read somewhere that you must have owned a vehicle for 12 months if you want to import it to NZ.
Is this right ?
Any links to further info would be most gratefully received.

We are taking our motor home because they are so much cheaper & better than in NZ we haven't had ours 12 months. This is what customs have to say
<
First time immigrants with permanent residency status and returning new zealanders who have been overseas for more than 21 months.
There is no duty on motor vehicles being imported into New Zealand (duty is however applicable on motor homes for nonqualifying migrants). to quqalify for tax (GST) free entry the importer must have owned and used the vehicle overseas for at least 12 months prior to handing it in for shipment or their departure from NZ(whichever is the earliest date). The owner will be required to sign a 'Deed of undertaking' with NZ customs confirmingthat if they sell or dispose of the vehicle within 2 yearsof importthey agree to pay the GSTthat would normally applied.
All other migrants and returnig New Zealanders who have been overseas less than 21 months.GST will be payable at 12.5% of the vehicles CIF value (purchase price,Frieght and marine insurance)
An allowancefor depreciation may be made depending on length of owner ship overseas.

The Land Transport people are also helpful especially if you ring them.
Hope this is helpful to you.
