In light of awful recent atrocities, I'm just wondering about the gun laws in NZ. Are they more in line with the UK or American approach?

From what I have heard from various Kiwis, the NZ law is fairly strict in regard to firearms.

I found this link (http://www.colfo.org.nz/Reference_Library/Research/Guide_to_New_Zealand_Firearms_Laws.php) that may be informative.

think its more akin to the UK. although there is a lot of hunting that happens rurally.

There's a few guns round these parts.. mostly for hunting possum, rabbits, pigs, deer etc.

Often see guys at the side of the road up near Arthurs Pass gearing up with their fluoro vests and guns, off hunting...

Neighbour offered us his .22 to get rid of a pesky possum but I think we'd have put it on the kitchen table and stared at it for a while, not quite knowing what do to!! :laugh We declined... I can live with the possum..

I believe it is a fairly strict process to go through in order to get a gun license here, which includes interviews with yourself and any referees.
Shotguns are very common up here in rural Coromandel, and hunting is popular as well. A few of my Kiwi workmates actually carry a gun in the van if they know we are going to a good spot for deer/pigs.
I went to a clay bird shoot 2 weeks ago, and was a tad concerned at the amount of beer being consumed by the rest of the competitors. it struck me as very odd that you were allowed to drink as much booze as you wanted whilst shooting, but were not allowed to wear jandals, only "proper shoes".

Slight tangent:

When going through the importing recommendations of the shipper, the rules and regulations and dos and don'ts, this jumped out at me:

Guns and ammuntion: possible, but need license

Books/magazines with p*rn_og*aph*c content: never ever, under no circumstances at all

Mmmmh.

Makes you wonder when someone last went and killed 30 people by hitting them over the head with a Playboy magazine, ey? :)

It's not hitting people over the head with a magazine that has the potential to harm...it's the abuse and degradation that can occur in the industry to obtain the photos of children and women contained in these rags and the internet (far worse than Playboy). The publication of these violent images are harmful in a couple ways - drugging, deciet, trafficking and kidnapping the individuals subjected to participating in the scene and, then, what men are doing to and expecting of women and children after pouring over these images...

Back to the gun question...seems nowhere could be worse than the US.

I wasn't really arguing the the harmful -or lessness of pornography, be that as it may, rather the inconsistency in banning the import of a magazine (presumably something that can be bought freely and without a license anyway in NZ), but not a gun.
