I posted a bit of info about this on another thread and got good feedback so I thought I would put it in a thread where anyone can find it. (propbably also should post it to the "Living on the Breadline " thread as its one way to have a vacation that doesnt cost the earth).
This website lists motorhomes available for one way return rentals, usually about $1 or $5 per day!. add to that you have to pay your petrol, some insurance, a booking fee etc, but we were able to have a great holiday at a fraction of the regular price, picking up in ChCh , driving over to the west coast, camped on beaches etc, wherever we wanted, because it was only a 2 berth so we could drive it off road a bit. then up to Nelson, Marlbourough Sounds, and the ferry to wellington. (The company pays for the vehicle on the ferry, sometimes the driver..each rental is slightly different) then we headed up the north island but managed to stay off Highway 1 nearly the whole way, by going on the west side of Lake Taupo, through the Manawatu Gorge, etc. It was great to meander and we had the time, saw a lot of the road less travelled. :yes

The page is updated every day or so, if you see something you like you have to move quickly to get in touch. I emailed the people regularly so they knew what I was looking for and got in touch with me.
