Hi there

South Auckland is OK. Papakura has some nice parts and some fairly average parts. There is a lovely sub-area of Papakura called Connifer Grove. Have heard the same regarding Manurewa. No it would not be as bad as Brooklyn, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

Hope this is of help.

I have of course no idea (not that I ever let that stop me) whatsoever about Auckland's suburbs, but I do know it is always incredibly difficult to judge any area.

We live in East London, in an area that certainly has its challenges, to put it mildly. I have never felt unsafe here, I have never been burgled, I've left windows, door and car unlocked accidentally, I have even left my car door wide open (don't ask) for half a day and night, and nothing has ever happened. Oh, I take that back: we had our front gate (again, don't ask) stolen once.

We know all our neighbours and get along well with them, we feed each other's cats, check the houses if someone is on holiday, etc. The only issue we have is the schooling, or rather the lack of decent schools. If not for that, I would stay here, and be quite happy to live here.

I guess I'm just saying it really depends, and it is diffucult to make a general statement about a whole area.

I'm not too fond of Papakura as I originally thought that's where I would live, but after spending the first couple of weeks there, I decided I liked Howick better. Papakura does have some lovely parts. Other places around there that are nice are Wattle Downs as well as rural areas outside of Papakura such as Drury or Ardmore.
Come and have a look. Drive around, look at some open houses or rental properties and see what you think. Yes there are some bad parts of South
Auckland, but you'll know what you like once you've seen it. For me, it was a balancing act between finding a place a liked and one I could afford.

............. it was a balancing act between finding a place a liked and one I could afford.
The good areas in Manurewa (Manukau Heights, The Gardens, Wattle Downs) and Papakura (Conifer Grove), the houses are expensive.

i've also noticed that those areas like wattle downs, the gardens rentals are expensive!..

affordable for us would be nice areas with rentals around $220-280..
that should help further more with the right areas in south auckland..

Hi Jamilliah,

To be perfectly honest, no matter what people say about the various areas, there is no substitute for coming and having a look for yourself. Am I right in thinking Wellsford is a couple of hours drive away from South Auckland? If so, mosey on down here and see for yourself.

You don't say if you need schools/pre-schools or no schools as that can often be helpful in choosing an area.

I'm sure people can voice opinions for you (as they have) but I would think you need to walk around the area and get a real feel for it. Also, the book "Where to Live in Auckland" is a useful research guide.
Good luck,

Gil

hi gil..yep wellsford is far from there..we will probably hitch a ride from a friend to look around..

im living with my parents.so they would like a place close to transportation as they dont drive and will be learning.also not too far from shopping strips and diarys and schools and such..just as convinant as you can make it..for non-drivers...

These are desirable areas in Manurewa and thus, the high price tags.

Have to agree with the others, you will pay more for a rental in the more desirable places in South Auckland (or anywhere infact). Not sure what type of rental you are loking for but would imagine will be more than $280 per week for anything decent in a nice area. Agree you need to have a good look around and talk to the locals, you will soon get a feel for the place, often just by looking is enough!!

There are spme nice parts of Papakura and if you need somewhere with good transport links and shopping, schooling etc. you can't go far wrong.
We live in Wattle Cove so can be of help to you if you make the trip!
$280 rent per week won't get you a great deal but it depends what you expect.
