We just discovered last night, while my OH was very ill, that the ministry of health runs a 24 healthline
http://www.moh.govt.nz/healthline
the 800 number connects you to trained nurses who can help you decide whether what is ailing you warrents a trip to the ER, urgent care etc. or whether you should just stay home and rest. Also helpful is that they can direct you to where medical offices are located - very handy for people new to the country or those who are on holiday around the country.
We felt that the service was good and professional, and thought others here might benefit from knowing about it.
