After a thread started by Whiskythedog about average house prices:
www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11192
I wondered what people who emigrated actually paid for their houses.
Feel free to comment where, why and what condition if you want.
Cheers
Tia

$370k, recent internal renovations, 3 bed late 1960's, metal roof, brick base, weatherboard upper half. Good sized section, good zone for schools (but not excellent) nice area. Bought 3005, prob worth about $400+ now judging on recent sales....

Oooh, I do love a poll. Wish I could think of something to poll people on. I've estimated, because we are buying land then building. I'm hoping the finished product will be worth more than the component parts. Not that I'm ever selling, I've had enough excitement for one lifetime.

Bought June 06 @$470. Brand new plaster over brick, steel roof. Not a big section for NZ but reasonable for our area @620m2. Ours was one of the first on new subdivision and recent sales for comparible propertys are circa $525>$550.

one house (large on 1/4 acre) 12 mins walk from chch centre 2 1/2 yrs ago, bought to be a backpackers hostel............$348k
another house on the street directly behind very very shabby (1/4 acre in 4 tumbledown flats) bought same time ...............$287k
Warehouse bought last week $350K
the two houses have increased by at least 25% on the land value alone.

So it looks like most people will spend between $350,000 and $750,000 which is higher than the average figures from Whiskythedog's post.
I'm thinking this is probably because many new migrants are tied to jobs near main cities so often have to pay more, combined with the fact that the reason many people move is to be nearer beaches and good schools and such areas have naturally higher house prices?

And possibly because house prices in Uk mean some are bringing quite a bit of dosh with them?

Our lovely house was bought for $355,000 just over a year ago on the North shore. 1960's house, weatherboard, three bedrooms. We have a garden, not huge but big enough for us and a great deck with great indoor/outdoor flow (had to get that bit of kiwism in:laugh ). Bus stops into town 2 mins round the corner. Few minutes drive away from shops & supermarkets. Nice area with lots of trees.

Paid $460K for a 3 bed, 160m2 house on a 680m2 section, in decile 10 primary school catchment area, just about a year ago. Paid approx $23K for staircase to 2 rooms in basement to make 4 bed with large rumpus. Probably worth about $550K now.

I wasn't going to post my actual price, but here goes - we paid $239,000 - we didnt want to pay this much - but that was the lowest the vendors could go - so they chucked the animals/farm equipment and even an electric blanket in for that.

also very few people on here are buying their first house - taking an entire group out of the stats that would tend to be lower price house buyers.
