Hi everybody,

I have searched this site and don't seem to find any info on this.
I read on the other section of this site: http://www.emigratenz.org/moving-pets-to-new-zealand.html
that the microchip needs to be 134.2Khz, but I can't seem to find a place here in the USA that supplies that frequency.

I found one other thread that had the word microchip in it, but it was about shipping costs. On that thread I did find information for a shipping company called International Pet Transportation, and have left a message (they're still sleeping on the West Cost!) ;)

If anybody can give me information on what you did for your pets, please tell me?
Thnx!
Colleen

I shipped my dog from the USA with IPT. They assured us that MAF in Auckland and the quarantine facility in Auckland could read his chip and we had no problems. I would call the quarantine facility directly and talk to them about it.

Some old chips are not compliant with current standards, so you'd need to re-chip or send a special reader (!) But any chip with an 8-digit ID should be okay; HomeAgain is the most widely known brand in the USA, I think, and they can be read by NZ MAF.

Also, FYI, the Bible of pet importation from the USA is here:
http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/animals/standards/domaniic.spe.htm

There is literally one person in charge of this effort; you can expect speedy replies to email questions, in addition to lots of information shared here.

We have AVID brand chips in our dogs and they came through MAF fine.

BTW, I also found out that the microchip HAS to be implanted on the same day as the Rabies shot is given.
The vet must be able to scan the chip before implanting (whether local or international chip).
The pet must remain in country for 6 months from the date of the titer test (3 weeks after the rabies shot).
One month before flying there has to be a second titer test.

We're looking at hauling out a total of over $3000 for our kitty!! Boy, what an expensive pick-up kitty she is!!!

Well, the requirement is that the microchip be implanted before that first rabies shot in the process, so the vet can confirm the pet's ID (established solely by that chip).

If you've already implanted a microchip, as many people have done to trace their animals if lost, there is no need for another one.

Condolences on the expense but you cat will be well looked after....

Hi, I just went through this with my kitty from San Francisco to Auckland. I was really not prepared for the length ahead of time that I needed to prepare her. We got the AVID chip and rabies vaccine, then the rabies titre 3 weeks later. And still, I have to leave her with a friend the last several weeks because we are out of time on this end!

We also went with IPT. They are being so very nice and thorough. I gladly recommend them to anyone shipping cat or dog to New Zealand. My vet gave us some trouble with the final titre test, apparently some vets send blood samples to 3rd party labs for processing back to the Kansas testing centre. This eats up your allotted 30 days for the final results. So we are going to get a crash course in packing a blood sample and are shipping it directly to the lab in Kansas! All this possible through the advice of IPT.

It is costing a pretty penny, with shipping + quarantine we estimate $2300 for one (very small) cat. I ask her if she's worth it, and she just purrs and curls up next to me....
