I read on the travel sites that you need to plan on $1000/mo and have to be able to prove it. Is it wise to just set up a bank account in NZ for this? I'll most likely only be in NZ for a month max this trip but as I mentioned in my intro - will be looking to come back in '08. Would having a bank account help "establish my intent" and for those who have been before - what is a good amount to bring for a person travelling alone. (Well not alone, as my NZ friends will be my transport for the most part - just that I am not bringing anyone with me.) During my stay in Invercargill I will also rent a car for part of the time - anything I need to know about that? I realise that the cars/roads are opposite of ours here in the US, so I mainly asking about license requirements etc...

Thanks!
Beth

I wouldn't worry about setting up a bank account for the purposes of proving to immigration - they only check very rarely, if they suspect you're likely to work, and even then flashing a credit card at them, or if they're really problematic a foreign atm card and bank statement, should be fine.

Of course, you may decide it's the easiest way to access your money in NZ, which is another issue.
