I am a French and German Secondary School Teacher. Did my degree in European Studies with French and German and then a PGCE in French and German. I have been teaching for four years in Scotland and have recently moved to NZ with hubby to be. Have applied for NZQA assessment of qualifications and thought it would be relatively staright forward but it's taking forever to come through. Also spoke to teaching council again and they have put some doubt in my mind that there would be a NZ equivalent. Has anyone else been in this situation and are now teaching? Thanks!

Hi there

I really don't know the answer to this but just wanted to say that based on our experience NZQA are quite iffy about the Teaching Qualifications they will accept. Anything out of the ordinary creates a problem.

If you don't get an equivalent NZ qualification by NZQA then you might ask the Teachers Council about their Route 2 Teacher Registration which they can do for teachers with teaching experience but who don't qualify with the 'normal' qualifications. Mind you, this isn't always an option as I've heard that most teachers who get registration through this route are paid as unqualified teachers which is a really low salary.

Good luck with your assesssemnt, hope it comes through successfully for you

You should have no problem with your Scottish PGCE as long as it was from a reputable university and you've provided the appropriate info to NZQA. The OH PGCE was from Durham Uni, and NZQA went to the extent of contacting the uni for further information about the qualification which took extra time, but there wasn't any problem.

Fingers crossed it's the same kind of delay for you.
