Well, we arrived in Christchurch on the 22nd of March, and immediately set to work searching for midwives. After registering with a local clinic, they handed us a very multi-paged list of midwives. After ringing through most of the ones on the first page and beginning to feel a bit discouraged because everyone was booked up for such a near birth, she finally started getting some hits. Seems everyone starts at the beginning of the list and works downward (must be a lesson there with lots of applications!)

Anyhow, we got a wonderful midwife who lives only a few blocks away, and they did several visits, all carried out professionally and being very informative. Last night, on her due date to the day (thank you, God), my wife's waters broke at 10:00 p.m. and the midwife showed up rapidly in response to increasing contraction duration and frequency. Another midwife came along and a trainee showed up as well--all handled things very professionally and we had a speedy delivery at 11:38 p.m. Job done, cleared out by 2:00 a.m. or so, and we're all cosy at home in our own beds. Gotta love it!

All in all, very happy with our decision to have a home birth again, and very pleased with the performance of the midwives here in this area.

Baby boy, 8lbs 6oz, and he's been sleeping all day. God help us tonight!

Big congratulations to your wife! It must be great for the whole family to be together so soon after the birth.

And I'm sure the breakfast in bed will be a vast improvement on the hospital ones! :)

Cheers

Well, we had a neighbor lady drop off some Morrocan soup today with three chocolate egss for our kids, and our friends up the road brought over a huge pan of soup as well--not to mention the two meals my wife cooked up ahead of time. Yes, we are all eating much better than hospital food, and my wife is soaking in her own tub for the second time today, this time in candle-light. Actually, I'm a horrible husband--I got up and fed the kids breakfast, but I'm pretty sure she got up and made herself some French Toast! Oops.

Our three other children were all asleep in bed through it all, and it was so-no-fuss! My wife probably has a slightly different perspective, mind, but you can't hardly beat 1:38 minutes of labour start to finish!

His name is Eran Michael Berger. Eran is Hebrew and it means 'alert' or 'watcher' and related connotations.

Our oldest boy (four) was all grins this morning; our middle girl (two) was a bit ambivalent, and our youngest (one and a half) was downright displeased. Going to have to spend some time reassuring him...

Congratulations ! We also had 4 kids "under 4" and although it might sound like an lot of work, it was (and still is) great to have them so close in age.
Good luck ,
Laura
