Would anyone know wether Palmerston North still issue Work Permits ?
Once again, Immigration have been telling a different story everytime I ring !
My brother needs to be issued with a work Permit in the very near future (before he applies for his PR)
Palmy, first off, said there will be no problem in him obtaining a Permit from them, while his PR application is being lodged at ChCh, and would only take a matter of a couple of weeks - however, they are now saying they only deal with Student Visas and he will have to apply at the ChCh branch where he's Residency will be submitted and it could take months !
Am i being a bit dense here ?? Surely if he needs to get a Work Permit (which would mean he has a job offer) How can anyone expect an Employer to wait months for an Employee to take up a job offer because he wont be eligible to work until the Permit comes through ?!?

Were also in Christchurch, my wife applied for permanent residency under the family / partnership program a month ago and we just received a letter that said her application was accepted for processing 2 days ago, here's the real kicker, the letter also said that her application will be assigned to a case officer within 12 months:confused: , her Work Holiday Visa expires in December so just to be on the safe side she's going to apply for a 2 year work permit, just in case here PR is not finalised by December.

We also heard that if the PR application drags on for a long while she may have to get another full Medical & X-Ray Certificates as well as a new Police Certificate.

I don't know if that's correct or what the time frames are, all I could find on the NZIS website was that a Med / X-Ray Cert had to be lodged with the PR application before it was 3 months old.

Does anyone know what the story is on this ?

My understanding is that P/Nth process student and temporary visas.

According to their website this includes visitor, student, work permits & RRV's.

I wouldn't worry unneccessarily on this. I was told the same when I applied for my PR - it then only took 2 months for me to get my blue stickers.
Also, it is my understanding that you would not have to get medicals again, as your application has now been lodged with Immigration - I don't think it is when the case officer is assigned to you.
You might want to double check on this though, or some other lovely forum member will be able to explain it better as I don't want to be giving you the wrong information !
