hi all. Quick question. My husband and i are here on 3 year work visas and are planning to apply for residency which we have been told we should get. My husbands parents have just visited for a couple of weeks but are desperate to be able to come over for a longer stay, ie a year or so. Couple of questions:

1) if they came on a 9 month visitor visa are they allowed to bring their pet with them?
2) if we were granted residency, would we have to be here for a certain period of time before we could apply for them to join us?
3) As his father is 59, are we right to assume that he couldn't apply to come as a worker even though he is a skilled carpenter and tradesman?

Any advice appreciated!

Hi

Not so much "advice" from me but the ramblings of someone who is also trying to get their parents here.

I have recently discovered that they can come here on work visas - i.e my father wants to continue working in to retirement - he is 61 and mum is 59. So gettting a job while they are here on a visitors visa could be a route - they will then get a year, or two year, work visa. This may be the route my parents will take as I can't officially sponsor them until we have been here on PR for 3 yrs which will be March 08.

Not sure about pets, but would be expensive for them (and stressful on pets and owners) to be shipping them back and forth.

As I said, age doesn't seem to be a limiting factor for work visas - there's another family on here whose mother is staying here on work visa and they were late 50's/early 60's.. so there's hope!

Keep us posted.. hopefully someone will come along with some concrete facts (something I'm finding hard to get from NZIZ themselves!).

from what we've read on the immigration website, there is no age limit currently on WTR.

If they stay for 9 months they will have to stay out of the country 9 months. Apparently they could extend to 12 months but then again be out of the country for the same time again.

That's interesting about the Work Visa. When my FIL looked into it, he's 60, and also a carpenter immigration said there was nothing he could do but wait for centre of gravity to fall this side and us sponsor him

We looked into the work visa but decided against it for logistical reasons.
Even if my dad could find someone to give him a job, (he works in an area of shortage) he would need an employer who was willing to then wait for him to sell up and move here. Considering his age we felt such an employer was hard to find. Then in 2 yrs he would have to undergo a second set of medicals for us to sponsor him. If, (heaven forbid) his health had deteriated he could find himself homeless in the UK and not able to stay in NZ.
We can offically sponsor my parents 8th Sept 09 but, if I understand things right, they can come to NZ 6 mths before that on a visitors and ask for an extension to remain while sponsorship is being processed. What I can't get clarity on is whether my dad would be able to work once he is sponsored.
