hi all. Quick question. My husband and i are here on 3 year work visas and are planning to apply for residency which we have been told we should get. My husbands parents have just visited for a couple of weeks but are desperate to be able to come over for a longer stay, ie a year or so. Couple of questions:

1) if they came on a 9 month visitor visa are they allowed to bring their pet with them?
2) if we were granted residency, would we have to be here for a certain period of time before we could apply for them to join us?
3) As his father is 59, are we right to assume that he couldn't apply to come as a worker even though he is a skilled carpenter and tradesman?

a) I think so (at least if you guys bring the pet in your name when you have residency) - but from the UK you are looking at a minimum £1,600 which seems a heck of a lot when you'll have to pay the same or not more to send the pet back.

b) You have to be resident for three years to sponsor parents - but it's a little more complicated since they can't be sponsored if they have more children in another country than they do in NZ.

your parents could come on work visas, and you just sponser them 3 years after you get residency, that way they can stay here permenantly and bring the animals etc.
thats what my perents are doing, they have been here nearly 2 years on work visas and we can sponser them in may next year.
you said you father in law is a cartpenter, he should be able to get a job offer no problem, he will just have to work while on work visas though.

I'm always interested in hearing about situations with parents moving to New Zealand so I wonder if there's any more news here?
