How long can I stay as a tourist in NZ (from the USA)? Once that time is up, how much time do I have to spend in the USA before I can return again to NZ?

Don't ask...I'm considering all sorts of crazy options at this point.:D

the initial visitors visa is for 3 months. when this is about to run out you can apply for an extension to the visitors permit, and this is usually either another 3 months, or in some cases it can be a permit which allows you to be in the country for a total of 9 months in (I think) an 18 month period. but once you have used the nine months you must not remain in the country and cannot get another extension.

this is all subject to passing basic checks. when I applied for an extension to my visitors permit I was told I could not get longer than 6 months unless I submitted chest Xrays.

Have you considered coming out to NZ on a Working Holiday Visa? This will allow you to live and work in NZ for an entire year. Plus if you need another 3 month extension beyond that point you may apply for a Visitors Visa.

Based on your previous posts it seems you would qualify and it would meet your needs. I took this route while I was trying to determine if NZ was right for me and found the WHV application to be quick and easy.
