How long does it take to get a police check completed in the US on average?
TIA,
Carly

I've just answered my own question so for anyone else who wants to know it's 16 - 18 weeks according to the FBI web site.

Hi movefromus,

We sent our requests on 08-Mar-07, and received them back on 25-Apr-07. We also wrote "For immigration purposes, deadline 01-Jun-07" on the request form, and on the outside of the envelope. I highly recommend that you send the form by certified mail, in order to verify that it actually arrived and someone signed for it. Although we didn't do it, some people also recommend sending a preaddressed, prepaid Fedex mailer (or similar), to allow tracking of the return of your form.

Thanks that sounds like great advice.

Before the new passport requirements went into effect in Jan/Feb, we had ours back in two weeks (w/date on outside of envelope). I needed another for teachers council, and it was after the FBI was swamped with new passport/fingerprint requests....it took 8 weeks.

I think they overestimate it on the website so people won't bug them about it if there is a delay.

I'd still write "for immigration" and the date on the outside of the envelope, and to make it speedier, I'd overnight it to them with an overnight return envelope on the inside for them to return it to you (I sent mine by FED EX because I had an account with them--easy to get online or in a store).

Good luck!

I got ours back very fast. I can't remember now, but I think it was about 2 wks. I 2day UPSed it with the immigration notice and date needed on the outside, and put a return FedEx 2day return envelope in with the paperwork. This was at the end of Feb/beginning of March.
Good luck with it,
Ana
