Hi everyone, we have just received our ITA and going for our medicals on Wed - not looking forward to them although OH is as any excuse to get his kit off suits him (i think i'm going to be sick) lol.:roll
We are planning visit in June OH plumber to sit exam. We were hoping to hire a motorhome as we will be flying into Auckland, travelling up to Hamilton for exam and then onto Taupo to meet future employer and obvioulsy where job is and therefore will be settling. We need to check out schools, houses etc.
We have been looking on this forum for a while now and you are all a regular mine of info.
Are motorhomes expensive to hire?
What hidden costs are there? (money just flowing out door at moment).
Will our UK driving licences be ok?
Family consists of OH, me (Liz) and two girls aged 14. Things seem to be going so quickly, we seem to spend our days working and filling out endless forms at night.
I haven't broke a gut trying to find work as I'm hoping to set up my own business when we get there. How hard would it be as we are coming to NZ (from Scotland) on Skilled Migrant Residency/Work?
As you can see from the above we have endless questions, I do hope you'll not be sick of us!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
Liz & Billy & family

Just thought i would say hi as others haven't, oh people can be so ignorant.:laugh
Anyway good luck on both fronts with OH flying out here and leaving you to look after the fort whilst he is busting his gut out here. Sorry can't answer your question re motorhomes as i have never hired one, but am sure someone can help you there. Hidden costs, well that is something that i don't think anybody can answer solely due to us not knowing what you are exactly after, but for your UK licences then the answer is you can drive on it for 12 months and then sit a theory exam of 35 mutiple choice questions, you must get 32 right to pass.
Keep the questions coming as i'm sure, no i know someone will have an answer to them.

Hi and welcome
You ned PR to set up a Ltd company or so I was told. Not sure if you are self employed sole trader. Depends what your business is. You will automatically get a work visa if your OH gets one. that will enable you to get a job or temping which ever suits. If OH gets a job and PR is straightfoward should be not an issue.
You may want to get a Bach instead of motorhome, to make it feel more like you are living here. Probably works out the same with a hire car instead. there are some really great cheap hotels/motorhomes about. Pluis depends on the weather when you arrive.
We came here 2 years ago on a reccie and I wished we had just driven and then found the nearest good motorlodge accomodations when we got to each place. Instead I booked all our accomodation ahead. some where very dissapointing from their web piccies.
good luck

Welcome to the forum, sure you'll be fine. You can get a lot of information on here, so good luck.
Don't worry about the meds, they are pretty straightforward, but yes, the emigration process does seem to be one long shelling out of cash. :)

Hi and welcome :nice1
I'm pretty sure that if you come here with Skilled Migrant PR then you need to have a job in that field for a certain period - if I remember it's 3 months. You could then buy a business.... not sure if there are any restrictions...

I'm pretty sure that if you come here with Skilled Migrant PR then you need to have a job in that field for a certain period - if I remember it's 3 months.this is only if you use points from a job offer to get enough points for your PR. if you do that then you have to stay in that particular job for 3 months. otherwise you are free to do whatever you like.

A big thank you to you all for taking the time to answer my many questions. No doubt as we go through the process there will be many more!!!!!
Had to phone NI in Newcastle today in an attempt to gather evidence of OH's work history - some of his employers are not in business any more and he was self employed for a while but all this was 20 yrs ago and nobody seems to keep records for more than 7 yrs uuuurrrrgggghhhhhh.
OH's NZ contract is for 2yrs so that's him all sewn up but I fancy having my own business so thanks for the info and will check out the possibilities when we across in June.
On the medical front we a bit worried as OH's waist is over 40ins (this just since he stopped smoking 2yrs ago - cakes are his downfall lol).
Thanks for the motorhome link Kat, will check it out and let you know how we get on.
I'm amazed at the useful info contained here - it really is a comfort to speak to people who have been through the process.
Right better go, I'm rambling again and they all waiting on their tea. Many thanks again and speak to you all soon.
