Depends where you are Spaceman, normally you have to apply through your local police force. I'd suggest the yellow pages first for the main copshop in your area and they'll be able to direct you from there - I know the checks up here in Grampian are not done through the main station but they were certainly able to push me off in the right direction.

Yeah depends on where you are. We contacted West Mercia as that was our area and they sent forms to us to complete. Our actual reports came from:
National Identification Service
New Scotland Yard
London SW10 0BG Tel 020 7230 2958

Not sure if all forms come from here though

We just went into the police station in our local town (which isn't very big) and asked for a form and handed it back the next day with ID and the £10 fee. It was very straightforward and had the certificate back in two weeks. That was with Humberside Police

As has been said, it depends on which force you are under but the local police station should be your first port of call, ask for a Data Protection subject access form. It costs £10 and can take up to 40 days.

Both me and the OH have completed police checks in the past (I am in the RAF and OH is Nursery Nurse). If we could pick someone's brain.....Any idea's if we will have to go through the checks again or whether the process would be quicker if we have been 'processed' before?:o

Doubt that very much, since they are only valid for a few months (6?). So I suppose that you will just have to do it again.

It is not the same as the CRB checks, though, which I assume was what your OH has done, which are rather involved and can take forever. The checks for immigration purposes really are just filling out a short form and adding a cheque, no big deal at all :)

It's not called a police check or police clearance - they refer to it as Data protection and Subject access just as Speckythecky said in the above post.
http://www.met.police.uk/dataprotection/faq.htm is the link for the met police FAQ which tells you a bit about it and then to access the form - you can try http://www.met.police.uk/contacts/ You should be able to download the form you need from that page.
Hope it helps. Ours was really quick - only took about 3 weeks.

can I ask a question...

How long is a police cert. valid for?

If we need to apply using our current address (before we're homeless and go on our European travels before flying to NZ) it may well run out before we're ready to apply for work permit in NZ.

Can I apply if I have no fixed abode? (either in UK, travelling Europe or NZ)

Thank you for this. Yes, we have both been subject to CRB checks in the past, and it did take some months to complete! Hence the worry over timescales! Thanks for the gen:nice1

Many thanks for the links, they have filled in the blanks so to speak!!

Cheers....

In answer to you travelling and then coming over here. the easiest way is to get the forms before you leave and fill them in, get someone to post them when you have arrived in NZ to the police address.

Have your address as your friends on the form. when they are posted back to your friend they can then post them over to you, to your new address here.

Which is what our daughter did for us. That way you have the full 6 months left on them. Our first lot got lost in the post so we had to reapply from NZ I posted them to my daughter so she could write a cheque and I put the money in her accout online.

so..

can I apply using someone elses address? is it not like credit searches or other things where they look up your history at that address?

and just to confirm - a certificate lasts for six months from issue?

thanks

Vicki,

On the form it asks for previous addresses for up to 10 years, so as ong as you provide these, then there would be no problem.
