I read about this in one of the free local papers about people in NZ reaching their 50's and going off on OE.

Between 2003 and 2005 the long term departures for:

Residents aged 50-54 rose from: 138,291 to 179,010
Residents aged 55-59 rose from: 115,099 to 163,474
Residents aged Over 60 (before retirement), rose from: 77,720 to 108,918

Those featured in the article work and travel in a similar style to those in their 20's doing an OE - staying in hostels and doing casual work.

And they apply for a UK ancestry visa available to Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent born in the UK in which they have to prove they are actively seeking work.

For some its a once in a lifetime experience, for other they are going back to see people and places they met on the OE they did in their 20's.

We went to see a rental where the couple were doing this, but they weren't working they were just travelling around in a camper van and renting out their home for the duration.

I wonder if we will all end up doing this, or whther the places we've left will no longer hold any interest for us?

I know two Kiwi couples in this category, one has been and now back, the other still away. Both couples are early fifties, kids off their hands, well educated with professional backgrounds, mortgage free, etc etc. And while both could afford to splash out a little with quality accommodation and travel neither chose to do so. One spent six months camping in Europe, basing the trip around food and wine, the other bought a VW camper van and is still meandering around doing the architecture/history thing!

Way to go!

I quite fancy the OE bit as it makes financial sense to do a big trip to see Europe/Asia etc. Not so sure about the slumming it bit though!

Although as one of my children already has plans to be an international rock star I'm sure he'll fund our planned jet set lifestyle. :D

that might be quite handy for you, it has lots of abbreviations on it, such as OH, which is Other half (partner)

I lived with a girl from Australia for a while. She was in her late 40's with two grown up kids. She came for OE and worked as a Nanny in London.

Also, we have family visitors this year coming 'home' for a visit after emigrating to the USA around 25 years ago. Their daughter and her family came over around 2 years ago and stayed with us for a while.

When my sister-in-law moves to NZ in August we will have a family connection there whether we join them or not and as someone remarked 'if you don't go your kids probably will'!

Families are going global!

I'd like to take an OE in my old age. There's always more of the world to see. Besides, I'd be bored if I retired and had nothing to do.

There was a story in the Metro today about an 84 year old man who went "just where the road takes him" for 24 years.
