Hi, my husband and I are just starting on this journey and it's been brilliant looking at all the previous posts on this forum. Thank you all! It looks like quite a process, but we're keen to get out there as quickly as possible. :exit

From the look of it, the best options for us would be Christchurch or Wellington - I'd prefer Christchurch, but it looks like there are more jobs for my husband in Wellington as he's a Cisco Engineer.

We're hoping that we can get out there under the skilled migrant category and eventually buy a small farm or build our own home! The dream seems one step closer already ....

Any advice would be gratefully received. We'll keep an eye on all the posts!
Regards, Brigitte

Hi and welcome. I don't know what I would have done without this forum. We felt like we were spinning our wheels and had no direction before we found this site. By searching old posts and adding new threads, you can find out about almost anything you want to know regarding NZ---the immigration process, housing, jobs, where the good wine is:cheers , what that bug is in your house :uhoh , kiwi customs and language, and on and on...!!! :p

It's wonderful to have you join us. Ask away; we're a friendly lot here!

Christine

Sunny B - Welcome! IF your OH is CISCO certified there will be no problem with work down here - just don't expect to earn the kind of money you can elsewhere :)

Register with IT SEEK - all free, you can get daily/weekly emails sent to you with your profile, give you an idea what you are looking for/at and give you access to the NZ recruitment agencies.

Good luck on your rollercoaster ride.

I wasn't quite sure how the kids would react when we started talking bout NZ this weekend - we wanted to be sure we wanted to go through with it before we unsettled them. I was really surprised by their reaction. Our daughter has already looked on the map and pinpointed where she wants us to live and son is looking for quad bikes on ebay ! Well, you never can tell with kids .....

We're so pleased. It seems all the more real when you can be openly excited - although I'm not sure my mum and sister will be quite as keen to see us go!

Thanks again for all your posts and look forward to meeting some of you when we get there.

StevieD, what kind of salary could OH expect as a senior CISCO engineer? From what we've seen it seems to be $150k ish which is obviously a lot less than here, but still pretty good. Is there a contracting market as he's been a contractor in UK for the past 15 years?

Hi StevieD, OH has registered with IT Seek so thanks for the ref. From what we've seen, CISCO jobs would earn up to $150k which, although less than the UK still seems very good. Does this sound too high from your experience there?

Many thanks, B
