Hi All,

I got my ITA through today. Something I was really surprised at as having been to NZIS they told me my degree did not qualify me as a skilled migrant and I'd be repointed and put back in the pool.

To recap I have 7 years experience as an IT analyst / Consultant. My degree is a BA hons in business education with Information Technology.
They require a level 7 qualification majoring in Computer Science, Information Science or Information Technology.

NZQA pre assessment says

The Pre-assessment Result for your nominated qualification, the degree
of Bachelor in Business Education/Information Technology (Hons) awarded
in 1998 by University of Brighton, Brighton, United Kingdom, after four
years of full time study, as follows.

Pre-assessment Result: Level 7

On the information available, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority
(NZQA) assesses this qualification as comparable to the learning outcome
of a qualification at Level 7, as registered on the New Zealand Register
of Quality Assured Qualifications.

If I put in an ITA I'll have to get a full NZQA assessment and medicals for myself, wife and 3 kids which won't be cheap, and if this route fails I'll have to get a job offer in NZ which is a lot of expense again.

I'm wondering if I should put the ITA in at all or save the money and use it for the trip to NZ to get a job offer?

Thoughts?

It's my understanding that level 7 is the one you need to claim bonus points in IT. Unless I'm totally misunderstanding, you've got what you need, but they will still need a full assessment from you if you haven,t done it yet.
Hope that's correct...

its the right level but until you get the full result back you wont know if they count it as an IT degree or not. it will depend on the course content and whether enough of it was IT based to count as majoring in IT.

we just went for the full assessment and had no problems when it came back my level 4 was assessed as a level 5 and my level 3 was assessed as a level 4 so i,d gone up a level from the pre assessment. well worth the investment as we got pr without jobs:nice1

This is *exactly* what happened to me. B.Eng (Hons) in Computer Aided Engineering but 10+ years experience as a Software Engineer. NZIS said that there my degree and job didn't match. Where the heck did they think I learnt to write software! Whatever, we got ITA'd with an adjusted 115 points and applied anyway. You literally pays your money and takes your choice...

My OH has over 10yrs IT project Managing experience but because his degree is an Electrical Engineers degree they wouldn't give us the point for his experience so after starting out with an EOI with 135 points we ended up back in the pool with 115! He had even gotten his Uni to send a course break down but it didn't have enough IT content in it.

Anyway to cut a long story short we invested in a one week reccie trip for him and he interviewed with 7 companies, received 3 offers, one of which he accepted. Just last week we got our ITA through the post as the job offer took us up to 160 points (I think). BUT.... also just last week Immigration dropped the points criteria to something like 115 so the moral of this story is.... you never can tell!

Not very helpful I'm afraid but I thought I'd add our experience to the mix.
