Peter and I have been having an argument about Wallabies. He says their are Wallabies in NZ, but I think he is just trying to wind me up.

So is it true, have they lept over from Australia?

Or is this another of Peter's tales like the escaped Pandas that live in bamboo at the Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh? The kids have been looking for the Pandas for years, and the youngest even claims to have seen them (though we suspect it was a large lady in a white jumber  ).

Promise this is my last silly question of this year. I will save the rest up till next year. :nice1

There are definitely wallabies in NZ - we saw one a couple of weeks ago while tramping at Lake Okataina here in Bay of Plenty! It bounced out the woods and away. I think they were introduced a long time ago and are pretty widespread in NZ now.

In fact I think that most of the wildlife around here is introduced, including most of the birds - blackbirds, sparrows, thrush, chaffinch etc. As are hedgehogs, rats, and of course the ever present pet cat to decimate the surviving local small mammals... etc. thank goodness for the tuis and bellbirds to make us realise we aren't actually living in the English contryside!

Yep they are around in NZ! And also in the UK. They were turned out of zoos and private collections in the UK during the war and can still be found in parts of the peak district etc!
