ENZ
22nd May 2007, 07:09 AM
I thought it would be fun to give away some ENZ t-shirts as competition prizes.
The first competition is for photos of everyday life in New Zealand, so please post your best photos below.
Prizes: The top 3 photos will each win an ENZ t-shirt. These are good quality shirts made from heavy cotton. They have not yet been printed, but will look something like this:
http://www.emigratenz.org/white-2.jpg
or perhaps:
http://www.emigratenz.org/Blue-1.jpg
Competition Rules:
* Each member may enter two photos for the competition. You should have taken the photos yourself.
* You should identify the location(s) shown in the photos.
* Photos should be no more than 600px wide. (To stop interference with the width of the forum on computer screens.)
* All entries should be posted by the end of 31 May 2007 (New Zealand time).
* Once entries have closed I, (or an anonymous member who I request by PM,) will nominate 10 photos for final voting using the forum’s polling option.
* Voting will stay open for one week – it will be anonymous and multiple choice.
* If your entry wins a prize, you may not enter it into any further competitions on ENZ. If your entry does not win, you are free to enter it for future ENZ competitions.
* Any member submitting a photo in the competition retains full copyright for the photo entered. By entering any photo in the competition, you grant a permanent licence for it to be displayed it on the emigratenz.org website.
Good Luck and may the best pics win.

because I'm doing a road trip through Tongariro / Rotorua / the Coromandel next week -- who knows what might be seen along the way :yes
This tree fern is about halfway along the main highway between Upper Hutt and Waikanae -- can't think of the highway number right now. Will edit this post later when I have it. I need a bumper sticker that says "I brake for tree ferns" because collecting pictures of them has become an obsession.

Yes, it is difficult to choose! I decided to interpret "everyday life" as humans in action in NZ.
The first is a young Maori man carving a Kauri tree in Rotorua.

The second is a family taking in the sites at the harbor in Wellington.

I call this the Huraki Gulf, Rangitoto and a massive ship.
Coming back from the CBD on the ferry I spied this enourmous ship in the Gulf and had to take a pic. Bobbing about were little fishing boats, the ferry and this behemoth. The perspective does not do it justice though.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/6481/hanmerplainstv3.jpg
I call this the view from the top of Jacks pass over the Hanmer Plains.
On our trip to the South Island I had the chance to have a little run up a mountain and was rewarded with this view at the top. Truly amazing and again my little digi cam does not do it justice.

Haven't posted in a while, but wasa brwosing this morning just before the removal guys arrive (today is Moving Day!) and thought, hmmm, if you want everyday life, I've got a picture of the walk home from school that our kids do every day. It's not a picture on a par with some of the beautiful ones already posted, but it's what the kids see every day:

Yes - fantastic pictures but I fear I haven't made myself understood.
The "everyday pics" competition is - as gil hinted at above - just that - pics of everyday life, whether it's people at work, the kids route to school, the school playground, the inside of a shopping mall, people in their cars, etc, etc, etc, etc. If you haven't posted something like this, don't worry, there'll also be a "scenic New Zealand" competition later, but for now I'm hoping for the more common or garden aspects of life - oh that's another one gardening!
Once again, apologies for not making myself clear :o but there's still plenty of time to add more pics. So come on everyone who hasn't posted yet - let's see some pictures that sum up everyday aspects of your life in New Zealand.
Douglas :)

First one -since its of EVERYDAY NZ, I chose the one I snapped on my mobile, as we were walking in the centre of Auckland,
I am assuming that the guy was a member of a Huka group... But to a newly arrived migrant It was a strange sight to see a guy in a skirt and bare feet!
The Second one is of RURAL everyday life and is of my part-time job (would prefer to make it 'the' Job!) of helping the neighbour muster his stock. it was a windy blustery day - but it was ACE:nice1

First photo is taken at New Brighton beach, just south of the pier. The kite festival in January is one of the events Christchurch runs as part of the (free) Summer Fun programme

2nd photo is taken at Akaroa. We happened to be staying there in February when a convoy of dragsters turned up for some sort of show (once again free). The two women in the picture were really excited over this model of car, who knows what sort of memories it provoked!

Many thanks to everyone who posted such a fantastic selection of pics. The competition is now closed to further entries.
What happens now?
I've asked two forum members to select their favourite five pictures to give us the final ten to vote on. (The forum software restricts us to a max. of ten options in a poll.) If there are any overlaps in choices, yours truly will pick any extra photos we need to make up the ten.
The first member has made his/her five selections. I think it will be a good few hours before the other five come in though so until then, we'll just have to wait. :)

Both judges have now made their choices.
Congratulations if your photo made it to the last ten. If not, please don't be too disappointed - each judge independently chose five entirely different pictures - so it's possible that, with different judges, different pictures would have made it to the final round. (We'll have another competition soon so everyone can have another go.)
You can view the 10 finalists here (http://www.emigratenz.org/everyday-life-in-new-zealand-pics.html)
The photos are shown in the order that they were posted to this thread.
I'd like to thank the judges (you know who you are) for taking the time and making their hard choices from so many excellent pictures.
If any of the finalists would like to provide me with a bigger photo (up to 800px wide) just drop me a PM.
I'll open a poll for voting later. :)

The closest you can live to Milford Sound itself is Te Anau (depending on how often you stop and admire the views, it's about a 2-hour drive) There only people who live in Milford itself are staff of the Red boats, hostel and hotel.
I lived in Te Anau for most of my teenage years and the views are just as good. Te Anau only has 2,500 people and is a summer only tourist resort, because the mountains are in the national park, we can't put up skifields like they did in Queenstown.
