I have noticed that in some threads people are worried about their BMI - is there a strict limit on this to pass the medical? I have a BMI of about 30 - OH is probably about 31 - we are not overweight - well we don't look it:D . I am a standard size 14 and OH is slim compared to a lot of people his age.

According to the info I've read, if your BMI is over 35 they insist on doing fasting lipids and fasting glucose tests as well as the usual blood and urine tests.

You should be fine.

Cheers,

Martin

The panel doctor I went to didn't actually calculate the BMI, he just mumbled something like 'well I can see it's okay' and just wrote <35. I didn't get the impression it would be an issue unless you are very overweight (BMI of more than 35).

You'll be fine, don't worry :)

Looks like I will have to breathe in during my medical then. Should be ok till the 'cough' moment:laugh
I also don't look to overweight so hopefully wont be too much of a problem

I actualy thought the limit was 30 rather that 35. I am borderline 30 so, if its 35 I will have another biscuit.:raebanana

Don't worry about your BMI score - mine was much higher than that unfortunately (well over 35:wah ) so go and have another Mars Bar;).

I had the fasting lipids test, the glucose test and a specialist report prepared by a diabetes expert on the recommendation of our panel doctor to assess the likelihood of my developing Type 2 diabetes in the future. We will never know whether this would have been required by the NZ medical assessor, but we thought we would pre-empt it just in case because we didn't want any delays in the visa as my hubby starts his job next week in Hamilton.

All in all they're trying to establish if you will be a burden on their health service in the future as a result of being overweight. I was found to be reasonably fit and healthy and got my PR:nice1

I have my medical on Friday and I know for a fact that my BMI is just over 35 at the moment. OH and I have been following a very strict diet plan recently and we've both lost a lot of weight (10.5 stone between us!) however I'm still concerned that my BMI won't be low enough to get through the medical.

From the sound of things I might just have to have some extra tests (more time and money I guess) but hopefully that's all.

Will it cause problems that my Mum (67yr) was recently diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic?

Any advice gratefully received!

Wow, well done on the weight loss Anneliese and OH:clap

I didn't get any time to lose some weight for the meds and consequently worried myself sick about it....and found myself comforting eating as a consequence:(

As far as I'm aware I don't think having diabetes T2 would be a barrier to getting PR as long as it's under control. In fact, I'm sure I've read somewhere that someone found out at their medical that they had diabetesT2and they still made it.

Good luck with medical and try not to worry:)

Saw this the other day: World Fatness (http://www.wellingtongrey.net/miscellanea/archive/2007-05-06--world-fatness.html)

Looks like the US is #1 for something other than blowing things up.

You will soon put it back on over here its a coffee & eating culture here. I lost loads of weight before we came. Went below 9stg for first time in 15 years. but its all coming back on now I work in Wellington. Everyday I have my coffee fix, and I was a decafe drinker before i came!! . Followed by wow what shall I have for lunch today, toooo much choice.

Moving into house with 98 steps so plan to get it off again.:laugh

Medicals a good way of finding out if your are all OK and its a nice MOT for you. fingers crossed for all of you

As expected at my medical last Friday my BMI came out at 36 so I had to have extra blood tests. Fortunately for me they didn't 'stick' me twice just asked me to come back on Tuesday (after fasting from midnight) to have blood taken for all of the tests. The surgery even worked out a way to keep the costs of the extra tests down so it was only an extra £35.00 (on top of £215.00 !!!)

Anyway.... OH went for his medical today and they told him my results were back and everything was fine! Phew!

Should have all the bits for all three of our medicals ready to collect on Monday which will be one more thing dealt with.

Thanks for the support folks!
Anneliese
