Hi Everyone,
A short post to introduce ourselves. I’m a Brit, married to a Mexican for the past 17 years and am heading out to Christchurch from Mexico on 2nd August for a month.
Hubby going on an Academic Visit to the University prior to a year’s sabbatical in Adelaide.
We’d originally planned to use the sabbatical to investigate emigration to Oz, nice English speaking, warm country with plenty of UK links. When our visa was delayed, we decided to postpone the trip until now and spend a month in NZ first.
Somehow, after beginning to read about NZ, I found this forum and became totally hooked (someone recently commented how addictive it is and I’ll second that!!). I found that the more I read about NZ, the more it felt like exactly the sort of place we’d love to live, and the lifestyle seems so much more “us” than Oz.
So, our month is to travel a bit (can’t wait to see all the SI scenery) and look at job prospects. I’d love to hear from anyone, especially someone in a bi-cultural (non-kiwi) marriage. We lived in Spain for four years and it was so liberating to live in a “neutral” country. Also would love to hear from any mums who’ve gone back to work with smallish kids (ours are 10 and 5) and how they handled the guilt and managed to juggle house, work and school stuff, especially mums who like me had no clear career before.

Thanks to all for making such fascinating reading and would love to coincide in Christchurch when there’s a get together to meet some of you.

Hey there! We're in the middle of our month-long holiday here, about to hit the South Island. My husband is half Mexican, so I have a small idea of where you're "coming from." If your hubby's familia is like my OH's, I'm sure you experienced the true meaning of family time!! Did you live in Mexico for awhile, or were you just visiting? I also lived in Spain for a short while, 4 months for school.

Anyway, nice to see you on the board!

Hi back, great to hear from you. Yes Able, will keep eyes posted for an August meet in Christchurch, would love to meet all the forum members. I'm so excited about going. Juniper, have lived in Mexico for something like 12 years, so ready for a change! My hubbies family is very untypically Mexican, or else not sure I could have held out as long as I have. He'll be thrilled to know there's Adriana and your OH out there to have a chat and mourn the lack of Tortillas and Chile sauce. So, hope to see you all soon. Shona
Heading to England on 19th June to visit my parents and recharge batteries, (first time back in seven years) before leaving for Christchurch,

Felicidad Total!! You have chiles in vinegar?? You have MASECA?? I knew that NZ had to be the perfect place to emigrate. I think it was the lack of chiles that nearly killed Guillermo in his 4 years in Salamanca, Spain. I tried to make flour tortillas but I think that's when he wondered why he'd married an English girl.(ja ja)
Yes, I do hope that we can meet up with Juniper too. We're looking at a two night stop in Wellington before we go on to Sydney, so if you could point us i the right direction for the Mexican brunch I think you mentioned somewhere G'd be thrilled. Unfortunately we'll be there mid-week but if you get a lunch hour would love to meet you for a drink.
I am so excited, I'm leaving Mexico in less than three weeks (going via UK tho') although I'm sure I'll miss the blue skies..
