Just got a shipping quote. About $9000 nzd from door to door with the shippers packing everything here and unpacking everything there.That's for a 20ft container from Auckland to Oregon. Yikes!

That's the same quote that I got! I've started selling my furniture. My boxes etc are already packed in the garage and I was told that because of the Patriot act, my boxes would have to be unpacked and repacked by a shipper. Apparently self packing is not allowed for shipments to the States. If i shipped them as is, the cost would be $5500 but the US would reject my shipment on the other side.

Have you heard anything like this?

ElizabethD: Sounds a little sketchy to me. I haven't heard anything like that but I will do some investigating....

SwissMiss: We paid around 5,000usd for our stuff to go from Oregon to Auckland (self packing a 20ft container). It was door to port so we ended up having to pay about $2000nzd more once the container got here for our stuff to be delivered to our house.

I moved to US 10 years ago and I packed my stuff in a 20 feet container and shipped from Switzerland. My container arrived to Long Beach. We had no any damage no any kind of rejection.
I would make more research about this "packing rules" you may save some money...

We used Crown from the U.S. We dealt with a guy called Chris Neo (1-800 631 6881). They were really good with communication and everything arrived pretty much right on schedule with absolutely no breakages! I'd definately recommend them...

Does anyone have an update on this return trip costs from NZ to the US? We're going for 3-4 years, and want to take our stuff with us. But I was quite scared by this thread - our stuff is not worth 9 grand! We just want to take it with us because it's such a hassle to sell & rebuy every little thing. I did find several firms to quote shipping 1/2 a 20' container under 2500. We figured we could bear 2 or 3,000 each way but that's about it.

Both were close in price and seemed willing to deal with an individual. If you are on the west coast and shipping in July we'd be willing to share a full container.
