How have others managed this? I've got NZQA and Teacher Council reg now but logistically can't apply for jobs starting next term. The best time for us would be to start the new academic year in Jan/Feb but those jobs won't be advertised until October onwards. Although our ITA is waiting to be completed it would have been nice to have a job offer. Has anyone been interviewed over the phone? Is the recruitment/interview process similar to over here with day long interview, classroom practice observations, presentation, governors' interrogation (delete)/ questions etc. The only way I can see it is to get over there but so close to our planned departure it seems a bit of an expense we could do without. Any ideas?

I had a job offer from the UK and I think that it's not uncommon. I had a phone interview and when I was a serious candidate I had a video conference interview. There are many teachers securing positions from aboard, so you should be fine. :nice1

Thanks, that's encouraging! Now, about this video conferencing thing. All a bit Star Trek to me at the moment. We don't have broad band out here in the sticks of mid-Wales.:laugh

FYI: I've been watching the job ads, too, and noticed there are several that say, "position to commence term 3 or start date negotiable."

I take this to mean that if they can't get a good candidate to start when they need it, they'll hold the position with a long term substitute and take you when you get to NZ (which might mean requesting they let you start Feb when the academic year begins).

Depends how desperate the school is and how much experience they've had with hiring overseas teachers. Popular schools in cities with no teacher shortages will not need to take the risk of employing someone they haven't met. More challenging schools in less desirable areas that are struggling to fill vacancies will probably be willing to take a bigger risk and employ sight unseen

The only way to find out is to apply. FWIW Mr Rr got his job from a telephone interview only. It was only once we arrived in NZ that we discovered that the school fell firmly into the latter of the two descriptions above...

this is quite easlily got around, Headmasters do fly to the UK for interviews, my partner has had a couple of interviews with schools this way and she too is looking to start in jan 08, this is a bit of a prob as it limits you but it is possible. If you are serious and I mean you really , really are serious then contact oasis education and ask for martin the guy is a legend and will help you but don't waste his time. He also flys over and meets potential teachers, you have just missed his last visit but he may be over again. He can organise a position for you. Hope this helps. :)
