Hi Everyone
I am going to be losing my internet access shortly due to moving out my house. My ISP is BT. I have my email account through them. Before leaving for NZ I will be staying with my family and really want access to my email as immigration and work will still need to contact me. I have set up a google mail account but is there anyway that you can redirect your email from bt to googlemail incase anyone emails bt by accident. What I'm trying to say is can you redirect your email like you can your mail.

Thanks

Karen

Cant exactly say yes or no to BT, as not familar with there email setup.
But 9 times out of 10 yes it can be done easy usually.

Do you have an option to check view your BT emails online? Firstly maybe that will allow you to check them whilst away etc. But more importantly if you have online email access, there is more often than not a settings or options button where you may find a "forwarding" option.

If there is a forwarding option, just forward all emails to your prefered address and tick an option that forwards all amil and does not leave them on server. That should and will send all incoming mail to your new prefered address.

Thats a generic way of doing it, again sorry i not sure on BTs options, hopefully someone using BT can confirm the above, or deny..

EDIT: ALthough if as you suggest that BT may have closed/ended the account etc, then the email address wil be gone and defunct.. :uhoh

If BT have closed your account, which I suspect they have, then you won't be able to access any emails. Anyone who writes to that account will just have their mail bounced and returned.

Yes you can do it with BT.

I had the exact same scenario, was using a btinternet account and had setup a googlemail account for when we closed our BT account (just in case, although it still seems to work a month on).

Anyway,

Log into your btinternet account using your web browser (www.btinternet.com/mail)
Click on the 'Mail' tab in the top left of the screen and select 'options'
Over on the right click on 'POP Access And Forwarding'
On the bottom half of the next screen you can enable forwarding and enter the address you want to forward to (i.e. your googlemail account)

Works a treat.

As I say, my btinternet account is still active a month after leaving the house and closing the account, but I assume at some point they will close it down so I stopped advertising it as my email address a while ago and have been using my googlemail account since with no problems and BT are quite happily forwarding everything into there with no issues to date. Actually since then I've bought a domain name and setup mail addresses using that for myself and family and am forwarding on from googlemail to there, and it all still finds me, even via two hops, so definitely working well.

PM me if you are struggling and I'll do some screen shots for you, but it's simple enough once you know where the menu's are hidden.

Just to add to the info above .. I stopped being a BT customer in September last year and my email account is still active - I'm not sure if it will close at some point as I haven't asked them. I get a lot of mail sent to it but don't send anything from it .. I wonder if they keep it open as long as it's active?

Karen, I discovered after my last move that the best long-term solution to e-mails is to go with an online service like Gmail. You have the same address regardless of your location or internet service provider. You can configure Microsoft Outlook to get your mail from Gmail, very slick.

Just set up your Gmail account, then send out a notification to all of your contacts. I think you can also forward e-mails from your old address to Gmail until your account runs out.

PS...I'm not paid by Gmail! I was convinced myself last year...
