This is going to sound really paranoid i know...

But was packing my shipping box and was about to place into it, 2 external hard drives of data / files. When i suddently thought it may not be great idea to just send hard drives, in case customs etc were funny about it and spend time checking files etc?

Is this just crazy? Shall i pack my external hard drives..

Can you back them up onto CD's just to be sure? I'd be worried about some sort of magnetic security device causing a problem.

Our boys stripped their PC's down and put it in their cases - Thats LCD screens, the internal stuff (Cases and keyboards we bought here)

The Customs were fine with it - they packed them in Anti-static packaging - then the LCD screens went in their backpacks - along with the hard drives - the rest went in their cases - in boxes well packaged!

The eldest took his back to the Uk the same way too.

Customs didn't bat an eye when they came through Christchurch, and LA just asked them to undo their backpacks and undo the packaging so they could see it was a LCD screen.

No problems with our laptop and external dvd writers etc. But that was in a laptop bag on the plane. Only put it through the xray machine, didn't bother at all and the bag was full of stuff.

IF you talking about putting it in the container or shipping, don't think they too worried at all. Don't think they got the time or inclination to check things like this unless something is flagged up to them. May be worth password protecting the drives if you don't fancy people snooping at your stuff.

Hiya Lee,

I took a 160GB external hard drive with me, in my carry on ;)

It went unsuspected and cleared customs with no problems at all, surely they saw it because it was xrayed but no one batted an eyelid. I think they're more interested in catching people with mud under their hiking boots or with prohibited food :laugh

I asked my local computer man that does any work :roll that needs doing and he said all you need to do is take your hard drive out and put in your hand luggage and replace it when your PC arrives.
