Here are a few things I daydream about our new life in new zealand:

growing exotic fruits in the garden - mangoes, avacado's, lemons, melons etc.

diving for and collecting seafood on the coast - lobster, scallops, crabs, bugs.

owning a boat and sailing away for the weekend, mooring in little bays, fishing for supper and cooking it on an open fire on a deserted beach.

ski-ing in the summer.

barbeques on the beach after work with my family.

trekking/camping in the mountains for a week without seeing another person.

Oh, and do you have deer in new zealand?

Add feijoas to that list - the girls realy enjoy collecting the windfall from the tree on common ground almost as much as eating them!

all thats possible if you have the cash, although the skiing in summer is iffy. If mt ruapaho has good snow in the winter they occasionally open for two weeks over the summer school holidays.

This weekend we went to Kiwi 360 in Te Puke (basically a tour round a kiwifruit growing orchard). This is because ever since my 6 year old saw a tourist video before we came, she has wanted to climb the giant kiwi, so we decided to grant her wish (there is a giant slice of kiwifruit that you can climb up inside at the entrance). Anyway, it was surprisingly quite a nice way to spend a couple of hours and they don't just grow kiwi there, they also grow mandarins, kumquats, lemons, grapefruit, uggli fruit, persimmons, figs, apples, quince, pears, macadamia nuts, sweet chestnuts and lots of others - no mangoes though. Not seen a mango tree in NZ yet.

Here's a picture of my 6 year old picking a persimmon!

As for seafood, there is an abundance of it around the coast. Harvested a load of Pipi's one time (like little oysters) just be burrowing down into the sand with the feet doing a sort of twisiting motion until you find a shell. Got to be quick though :laugh

BBQ's, lots of public BBQ's around - free too!!

Pipi is the Maori word for clams. I am thinking your pipis must have been some tiype of clam because oysters attach themselves to rocks, they dont live in the sand. Any way I bet they tasted lovely!
