If you are due to rent in Wellington (not sure of other areas) there is a shortage of tenants versus 3/4 bedroom houses. We are having trouble getting tenants to take over our lease. We have offered to match our landlords reduction of $20 a week to get someone with a $40 price reduction. Still no takers yet. Our agents says she has never seen it so hard to get tenants.
So if you are due here soon haggle the price as it may just work :nice1
Probably due to all those who bought to beat the interest rate rise and left their rented houses all at once.

Our ex-landlord's been trying to rent out our old 3 bedroom apartment for about a month now. Our lease goes thru the middle of July and to be honest I thought he was taking advantage of the fact we're paying for it to be very picky about who he rents it to. After reading that, I guess he really may be having trouble finding tenants. There sure didn't seem to be a shortage of renters when we were looking for an apartment in January!

It's definitely a smart move. We exactly did that when we signed our tenancy agreement, and agreed to sign long term (6months at least) and our rent was lowered by $30 a week :D
