Hey,
Vicki, hope the viewing went well!!!
Perksy...I tend to agree with Barb, selling your house, if you are reliant on the money it holds, can be a huge stress at the best of times never mind when you are ready to go at any time. If you have a certain bit of flexibility and can maybe rent it out, then there isnt too much of a rush. BUT if you have to sell to go, I think Id start the process if your comitted to going...I know its not ideal, but you can always pull out at the last minute....( I hope my buyers aren't reading this!!!!)
I would ring around your local estate agents, get them around, find out its value and how long houses in your area are selling...that would be my starting point.
Barb- he's completely fed up, because he is on medication, gray just tends to potter around and try and rest, if he walks around the house for 10 mins he is shattered at the minute. He is one of these men that used to be doing stuff all the time, i'd be watching the sunday eastenders omnibus and he would be outside doing something to the house, so it is a huge culture shock!!

well they seemed to like it but hey what do I know:roll
They made all the right positive sounds in the house, they have three kids like us and really want the extra space that our house has got, but they did mention the noisy road at the back when we went in the garden, however he said his last house was next to a railway so he appreciates you get used to the noise and don't notice it. Whether or not they like it though its the same situation as all the other viewers we've had... they still have to sell their own house yet.
I think our house is priced to realistically due to its position nr the road, in a quieter position it would be £50k more at least. What can I do to get people away from the noisy road issue???? I point out that its better the road at the back and be on a quiet cul-de-sac at the front. I have a water feature and windchimes in the back garden as a noise distraction but ... its pretty obvious there will be noise from the dual carriage way behind us. I know I have moaned about this before but WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT ???? ok rant over :o

Vicki - you are so right. What do people want? Surely they know that there is a busy road behind unless they're totally stupid. Remember also that they make negative comments when viewing so they can sometimes justify putting in a silly offer. Let us know if you get any feedback. Our agents were useless at this.
Barb - please let us know how you got on. Sorry you didn't get the cushions on those seats. I always viewed with slippers on too. Let's hope you all get good news soon
Haven't heard anything about a survey yet.
Jade. Sorry G kas been signed off. I for one am not bored with the latest happenings to do with G's back. Just would love to be able to fix it for you guys. You deserve a better time very soon. When are you due to go back to work? For gods sake lock up the hoover and mower and ladders etc.
Perksy - I am with the others. I would put it on the market now. We put ours on in May and it took almost 4 months to sell. I just figured that if it sold too quick we would stall them for a while or sell up and live with anyone who would have us.

Good Luck Vicki, hope you get some positive news soon, One thing to block out the noise of traffic is bamboo, not a lot of time to grow a big clump, but it is something to bear in mind if you are ever in the same situation.
Barb, very impressed with the buffing of taps, a couple of other tips for improving aromas in the house - spray furniture polish on the radiators and then turn them on; put some cinamon on a tray in the oven on a low heat.

Vicki, my mum has her house up for sale and she too lives with a busy road at the back of the house, all I can suggest is plan the times of your viewers carefully!! I don't know whether there is a difference in traffic at different times? OR Maybe rain is a good thing, as they can just look at the garden rather than go outside!!!!
Natalie, Im due back to work beginning of Oct, probs on a phased return...thing G is finally understanding that he can only do things in little steps!!!

We've been on the market for about 3 weeks, and had a few showings but no offers. We'll be in NZ regardless by January, but it'd be nice to have the capital from the house as a buffer.
The market is kind of slow here, but we're fairly priced, and I'm staying positive.

Agents just rung with feedback from last nights viewers, they really loved the house, decor, size of rooms and house in general but are a little concerned about noise from road at back. However, they have said they like the house so much that if we're still on when they sell theirs they definately want to come and look at this again - so I suppose thats fair enough, just hope they sell theirs quickly!!
Also we've been told that in general the market starts to move again in Sept. when schools are back and people start thinking of being in new houses for Christmas - would anyone else agree with this??

We were also told that things should pick up in September. Let's hope so! Your viewing sounds good Vicki.
We just had feedback from yesterday's viewing and as expected they said they loved the house but the downstairs accommodation and garden are too small to contain their hyperactive 6 year old. We get so much of this and it is really frustrating as there is nothing we can easily do to make it larger. We have a fairly small garden and kitchen and a large lounge/diner and study downstairs, but upstairs we have 4 large bedrooms so the downstairs area is a bit small for the upstairs. I can spend forever polishing taps and buying new hanging baskets but if it's too small there is nothing short of an extension we can do to make it saleable!
Aaagh - we are getting really frustrated! What we need is someone who would just love to extend.
Jade - not at all bored with the Gray saga and really feel for you both. Keep telling us what is happening.
Let's hope it's a viewing and SELLING weekend for those of us still on the market!

Wishing you a sale very soon EngiNurse. Where are you headed? We're headed to Christchurch. Wife will be working at the hospital, and I'll likely be attending the University of Canterbury.
The feedback on our place has been very good. One lady would have offered, but she's huge into entertaining, and our dining space wasn't large enough for her.
Patience is a virtue. I keep reminding myself of that.

1st September 2007, 08:03 AM
Barb - do you have room for an extension or conservatory even?
If so, it might be worth pointing the fact out to viewers as a future area to expand (and make the propertys value go up). Not everyone thinks of a wider picture than whats in front of them especially when viewing houses and thinking of so many other things to look out for.

I was also told the markey picks up in Sept.
Barb, how frustrating for you. If they want larger downstairs then presumably your house would be more expensive. You only need one buyer who doesn't mind. It's just finding them. We have a family home. 3 double bedrooms huge garden etc and one lady in her 50's has bought it. We didn't have one family look around.
Vicki - hope the interested party sell soon for you.
Anyway - let's hope if Sept is warm as promised then the buyers should be out in force.

Barb, j and Belmont Babes - Hard to argue with all three of you saying put the house on the market. It such a wrench. Hi Perksy. Belmont Babes is such a mouthful, just type in Nat. Much quicker. I know exactly what you mean about loving your home. I am still in love with ours. It is exactly what we have always wanted with size and it has a fabulous huge garden. The boys even have their own football pitch at the bottom. I think one of the problems is that you can't yet fall in love with what will be your new home. Whenever we usually move we know where we are going to and start falling in love with the new house etc and start making plans about where all the new furniture is going to go and decor etc. I do have a look on the property sites in NZ but find it frustrating as so many houses are "price on application". Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hello all,
B I think vixxann is right, maybe have a think about where they could extend, our house is large, BUT the size of the kitchen lets it down. The couple that are buying ours have plans for a £30,000 ( so they told me !!) extension on the side of the house for a bigger kitchen!
We love our house also, in fact we have been viewing other houses in the area, and we are loving ours more and more!! Every property we have been to so far, bearing in mind, they have fluctuated in price ( in some cases) by £100,000 have needed absolutely gutting!!! far too much work with grays back. We havent been looking at 'new/newish' properties as they are lovely, but we are really attracted to character/quirky homes.
Got home today and Graham said ' not sure I want to sell ours now after seeing all them'....and then we both just laughed hysterically!!!!!...its definately the nerves!!ha ha ha

Thanks all for the advice. Our house is very extendable as it is a detached and there is loads of space at the side and above the garage. Some people seem to see the potential and others don't want the bother, I guess.

Just one bit of advice. Have you already done your fixtures and fittings list for the solicitors. If you have did you include the light fittings or just ceiling roses. On most forms there are answers for both. If you have included the fittings then check with your solicitor that you can remove them as the fixtures list is legaly binding.
Kind regards

Hi Holland
2 weeks in Spain with family.
My aunt married a Spaniard over 30 years ago and they relocated to Spain. Despite the inteference of my grandmother and Franco they had 4 children and still live there. Cannot believe though how differnet it is - sooooooo built up and expensive! My cousin who is married to a Spaniard whose family own a large electrical contracters company on the Costa del Sol was telling us about the number of scams being run over there at the moment with property - so buyer beware!!!!!!
In Marbella - the mayor and head of building and planning are in jail for supplying and approving illegal building permits to the tune of over £200 million pounds - they think the actual figure is double this - buildings on these plots has been stopped indefinately and most buildings are being demolished including a 5* hotel complex. People are losing money hand over fist and one of the compnies most heavily involved is still advertising almost daily on British TV.
Put my property situation into perspective I can tell you!!!

Second viewing been and gone. Also raved about the place (didn't bake bread Vicki as you should see the mess I can make in a kitchen!) but I did light my Glade Oil thingy.
We don't really think they would be interested as they have 4 sons aged from 7 - 14 and mother is going to move in with them too. They were sizing up where they would extend and stayed ages, but I think even with an extension it would be a bit of a squeeze for 7 of them to live here comfortably. They did ask if they could come back and show Mother, so who knows.
My sister always says the people who gush over the house and say how wonderful it is are generally the ones who never come back. Does anyone agree with that? Cos I am a bit hopeful about the first couple who seemed to be so impressed - but she did gush a bit, so maybe that's not such a good sign!

Hi B,
I have looked at 10 properties last week, and I am polite to all, but I don't gush if I don't like it...The most i'd say is, 'this room is a lovely size'. I have only really gushed over one property ( do you remember when I was considering renting...it was a little terraced, I loved it), and I would have put an offer in if my hubby had of liked it...Gray was'nt convinced.
I think you have a really good chance of them putting an offer in. Even the viewers that have been this afternoon maydo, I doubt they will be able to afford a 7 bed house down south...they know how many rooms your has, and they may just 'muck in' until they can do amendment!!

Hello,
Had a rocky few days with G, he seems to have gone backwards pain wise. We have not made any concrete decisions, we are going to wait until we have been back to the hospital in 2 weeks. The problem is, surgery could just take him to the point that he is now, there are no guarantees that he will get any better...he could...but the surgeon seems to think it may just be a waiting game.
I walked into a local town yesterday, and was looking at the area and all of the houses, and just thought 'I want to go to NZ!!!!', I just don't know whether we will get there in Nov....we could have no house in about 6 weeks time...I am one of these people who likes to plan way in advance and I am really struggling at the minute, as I cannot do anything until more time has passed and we can see how G is.
mmmmmm...wish someone would just tell us what to do!!!! All are family are just presuming that we are not going as they think we would be stupid...but G is trying to think positive and hoping that we can go.
From a purely practical point of view, at this moment in time, he couldn't:
(1) Bend over to pack cases
(2) Drag a case down drive
(3) Couldn't cope with the journey in a car to Manchester
(4) waiting in an airport whilst in pain...
THE LIST GOES ON AND ON AND ON............................
Not to mention the long flight, and working when we get there, it was going to be hard enough with two of us working, never mind one!

3rd September 2007, 04:18 AM
Oh Jade, that is really tough. It is so hard for you to plan anything at all and must be so very frustrating. Your PR is valid until some time next year, isn't it? So possibly you could wait a while longer to go?
I have to say that having done that journey several times it is a killer, especially if you go straight from one flight to the next. When we went earlier this year we stopped off for 3 nights in Hong Kong on the way out and 3 in San Francisco on the way back, just to make it more bearable. I would definitely suggest that if you decide to go ahead in November and it is possible to stop over in Singapore for a night or 2 that you do that as otherwise Gray may find it really difficult.
I do hope that he starts to get better and won't need to have the surgery at all, but I know you just have to deal with whatever you are faced with. We really are feeling for you! M has back problems and knows how dreadful it can be, but fortunately for him it has never yet come to the point of having surgery. He sometimes is laid flat on his back for a week or two though, and that's bad enough.
We'll keep hoping for a miracle for Gray!

On the back situation, I work at a hospital - but in a non nursing/doctoring capacity - when we have staff who are on long term sick with back problems (obviously depending on what it is and if mobility will improve not increase the situation) we offer them a pain killing injection which after a couple of days brings on relief for approx 6 weeks. I was thinking this may be an option for the travelling if you decide to go ahead with plan A.
Might be worth asking your GP / Specialist for more information - I know its not widely available.

Just had feedback from MIL re our viewers who put in the very low offer, she seems to think that they knew the estate agents, wondering if it is one of those cons where they don't push your property, buy it themselves for a really low price then readvertise and push it to get what it it worth.
just waiting now to see if they had a chain and if they put in a more reasonable offer.
Jade, I know what you mean about the agony of sitting at the airport, a couple of hours on those chairs is bad enough for someone without G's problems, I know that I spent a lot of time lying on the floor, rather than sitting on the seats. OH MY GOSH - we've just had a second viewing:raebanana
But it was a spur of the moment someone knocking on the door thing
Several months ago our neighbour asked if she could bring around her friend who might be interested in moving locally. These two know each other through their sons who go to boarding school together, both sets of parents mostly live and work out of the country - I think she said Korea or Malaysia - but they want to live closer to the school for weekend visits when they are in the country (at the moment the other lady lives 3 or 4 hrs drive away).
So back in June or whenever it was we had a spur of the moment viewing, arranged by the neighbour coming and knocking, and just now she's come back with her husband and asked if she can have another look ! Of course I said yes and whilst they looked downstairs I quickly ushered the kids upstairs (we'd just got in from school) to make sure the uniforms didn't end up all over the floor etc and the loos were flushed etc etc you know!
Well, they say they are keen, her especially. She mentioned the road noise again like last time but just asked if we'd got used to it. Not really sure what position they are in regarding making an offer as she said they hadn't sold their flat in Reading yet, but last time she came they hadn't even put it on market so I'm guessing they are more serious now.
Anyway lets hope my neighbour can use her persuasive powers! (she crossed her fingers to me on the way out of the door!)
sorry for the long spleel - had to tell someone - hubbie not home from work yet and doesn't know!

Oh Vicki that's good news. Everything crossed for you. But, were the toilets flushed and the uniform tidy? I know the answer in my house!!!

Hi,
Viewing of Bungalow went well, the whole back of the house was a kitchen diner ( with an island-which I love!!!) and was huge!!!! It was really impressive, but he has just dropped £30,000 so I doubt he would drop much more...certainly not the price we would pay anyway! Dubious putting an offer in anywhere at the minute, putting our 'feelers' out just in case we need to buy pretty quickly after we have news from hospital.
G's appointment camr through today for clinic he is going on the 13th September, so fingers crossed. Bought a TENS machine today, hoping that may help.
Good Luck everyone

Going to view a house tonight that I feel really positive about, we could afford to buy it, have a small mortgage and either live in it for the time being while Graham recovers...or buy it and rent it out, whilst we go off to NZ....Im a bit concerned though because if we buy it, we'll not have much money to take to NZ.....ooooo, confused!!!!!!!! Anyone out there with advice??
G is improving bit by bit, I think by the time he goes to hospital they will say that he is recovering ok, so wont do op and just say its a waiting game...in which case its just left hanging.................don't know what to do
My head is telling me tocancel flights in NOV, buy afforable house, and visit NZ before march to stamp visa/go out there to live ( depending on Graham). My heart is telling me to just go for it you only live once, but if we get off the flight in Auckland, and Graham is in the pain he was in 3 weeks ago...I will completely regret going!
Having read up on what they have done to Gray it says that it doesnt prevent surgery in the future, it just buys you some time, so it could come back at any time.....Help!!
Im rambling now, Im going to stop!!
Viewing at 7.00
Hope your all well

Hope the viewing goes well Jade! As for the 'what to do' debate I don't suppose anyone can really give you an answer to that (unless we have someone here with a crystal ball?) and it is definitely a waiting game.
How long do you have before you need to make the decision to cancel the tickets?
I would think very carefully before you rush off there unless you are sure how you would be able to cope in an emergency. Personally I think your 'go in March and get your PR stamped' may be a very good idea. It would not only buy you some time but also give you the opportunity to have a good look around in NZ and be sure that you want to live there and also be able to check out some jobs, houses etc.
I know it is such a tough decision to make - but at least wait to see what the doctors are saying and then you will be able to make the best decision you can on the information you've got.
Let us know how the viewing goes!

Jade,
Do you both need to go out to get your visa stamped, or could you go on your own?
Not really a nice idea to fly round the world on your own, but as a means to an end it might be worth it, and it would save G the pain of the flight.

Jade - what a tricky one. I think I am with Barb and Specky. It's most unfair that you have this to contend with particularly after all you've been through. How long have you got until you have to do something about the flights? Could you just hold off until 13th and see what the latest is? Just be assured we are all here for you X
