Hi guys,

Well my first post. So I thought I would fill you in on what I want to do, and maybe some of you can offer me some advice.

I'm 16 and currently taking my GCSE's. From September I will be starting my A-Levels in the UK.

What I want to do it after my A-Levels is go to New Zealand to study at university. The reason for this is that Auckland university is the only place in the world that does the course I want to do (Bachelor in Business and Information Management BBIM).

I would be going to New Zealand on my own, as it is not viable for my mum to come with me. I have some friends who live in Auckland so I would be able to stay with them for some time.

If anybody can give me any advice on what I need to do to get a place at uni in New Zealand, then I would be very thankful.

From working it out, I believe I would be starting Uni in February 2010 due to them starting the teaching year in the February.

Thanks for any help you can give, and ask me if you need some more details.

Jarvis:)

Hi Jarvis

I did a similar thing. I wrote a long post here which may be of help.

Assuming you are not already an NZ citizen/resident, your main problem is going to be finding the money. University fees for overseas students start at around 14000 a year, and then you've got living costs on top of that. There don't tend to be many scholarships for undergrads.

Is that 14000 NZ dollars? I am hoping that I will be able to get sponsorship from a company to try and cover the costs, with me working for them afterwards.

Could you give some information relating to when you started the process of applying and everything like that, and where you a NZ resident or where you like me and a UK citizen?

Hi,

I am contemplating 2 different options for coming to New Zealand. My firts option is to apply for a study visa, and pay international rates by hopefully getting as company to sponsor me.

My second option is that I apply for PR (permanent residence??). I have a relative well a few relatives who live in NZ. I could get them to sponsor me> I would also be able to get a job with one of my relatives in Auckland. I would then apply to a NZ uni and hopefully be able to pay resident rates(?)

Can anybody advise me on any of the above.

Thanks

Companies in NZ do not commonly sponsor staff to study at local prices, so you would be fortunate to find a company that would sponsor you for international fees.

To keep some of your possible costs lower, it may help not to study in Auckland. Degrees that combine Business and Information Management/Systems are relatively common in NZ and you will find other universities that offer this combination.

If you are able to gain PR under the Family stream this would reduce your study costs and provide more options to you. Though I would carefully read the NZ Immigration site for information on the type of family sponsorship you will use, as there are different rules for each type of family member and not all family members can sponsor you.

Hi Jarvis and welcome to the forum.
Our 2 are coming over next year and have both been accepted in Auckland colleges but as has already been said the cost of living is higher here .
In case you have not already done so look through here. Everything you need to know can be found here eventually but it is a bit complicated so take your time

Hope this helps
